Brisbane Produce Report – 6 April

  April 6, 2023  adonaldson

As the Autumn chill sets in, and the Easter long weekend is upon us, there’s something comforting about hopping into your local Fruit and Veg Shop to pick up fresh ingredients sourced from the Brisbane Markets for your favourite comfort food or celebratory dish.

Our pick of the week is Butternut Pumpkin from greater Brisbane and Bundaberg, which is characterised by a bulb-shaped bottom with a slightly narrow neck. Butternut Pumpkin is high in vitamins A and C and roasts beautifully without needing to be peeled. Try this Smokey Pumpkin Soup for a comforting dinner or dip some roasted Carrots or fresh, crunchy Capsicum into this Pumpkin and Tahini Dip as an excellent afternoon snack or party starter.

Broccoli from Gatton and Stanthorpe is of great quality this week and a fantastic vegetable for packing in daily protein and vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and vitamin B6. Try this Broccoli Tabbouleh recipe for a nutritious dinner.

For those thinking green, there are also BeansSnow Peas, and Sugar Snap Peas from Victoria in steady supply this week along with Green Cucumbers from Bundaberg. If you are looking for a great long weekend lunch try this Smokey Pumpkin Soup.

Radish from Stanthorpe is a great option this week. This small, low growing, root vegetable proves an excellent source of vitamin C to keep you healthy as the Autumn chill sets in. Try this Radish Salad with Orange Dressing for something different.

Another versatile and plentiful ingredient this week is Parsley from Stanthorpe, which can be used in soups, salads, stews and dishes with meat, fish, and tomatoes. Parsley is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin K. It has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, improves blood circulation and is known to treat superficial wounds. If your looking for some seafood inspiration this weekend, try Pan Roasted Trout with Nectarine and Parsley Salsa.

There is plenty of Rhubarb from Toowoomba around this week. Although rhubarb is a vegetable, many people treat it as a fruit by using it on its own or with other fruits in jams, crisps, muffins, and pies. For a hearty desert try this Rhubarb, Pear, Ginger and Coconut Crumble!

Citrus is bouncing back this week with Lemons and Limes from Gayndah and North Queensland seeing more favourable weather conditions. Star Ruby Grapefruit from Gayndah is also one to look out for this week as well as new season Imperial Mandarins which are starting to come into the Brisbane Markets from the Burnett and North Queensland regions.

Bananas from North Queensland are plentiful this week and are nutritious, delicious and convenient. Their unique shape makes them a perfect snack for on-the-go that offers up energy to get through your day. They’re also ideal for being used in smoothies or in baking. For a healthy Easter treat try these Banana Snicker Bites.

Papayas from North Queensland, Pomegranates from Victoria and Persimmons from Gympie are also great eating right now and are great sources of vitamin C. If you are entertaining over the long weekend, why not try these Breakfast Crepes with Papaya and Passionfruit or Chicken Fillets with Pomegranate Glaze!

This week, we are also raving about Apples! With a variety of new season options available from Stanthorpe, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria such as Gala, Kanzi, Granny Smith, and Delicious, there’s an apple for everyone. Apples can be used in a multitude of recipes ranging from sweet treats like baked Apples and Apple tarts to salads with a satisfying crunch. If you have extra time, try making Apple Jam to enjoy with cheese and crackers or weekend scones.
