Mother’s Day is just around the corner, so now is the perfect time to plan ahead for Mum’s special day. Take some time to cook Mum a delicious meal and celebrate her with farm fresh autumn fruit and vegetables from your local fruit and veg shop, sourced from the Brisbane Markets. As it cools down, it’s a great time to make your favourite comfort food and relish in the last of the beautiful weather.
Our pick of the week is Mandarins from Gayndah and Burnett. With the growing conditions just right, mandarins are plentiful and good quality. They’re also packed with vitamins A, B, and very high in vitamin C, which is why they are a great cold weather staple to keep your body healthy and your immune system in check. Have some fun with citrus this week and try out this Mandarin Daiquiri for a citrus-packed refreshment.
Pick up some South Australian Quince this week to enjoy the subtle vanilla flavours and try something new. To select a good Quince, look for fruit that is solid and free from any signs of bruising. This fruit will quickly become your favourite over Autumn and Winter, so get ahead of the game and try one this week.
Also coming from South Australia, Pomegranates provide a healthy dose of antioxidants and vitamin C. Try this Oven Roasted Eggplant, Pomegranate and Pecan Dip recipe to impress your guests this weekend.
Watermelons from North Queensland are still in abundance. Another great source of vitamin C, make the most of this immune booster as we come into winter by making a delicious Watermelon Fire and Ice Salsa that can be added to compliment other winter dishes.
Persimmon from Gympie and North Queensland continue to be great value this week. High in fibre, antioxidants and vitamins, this superfood is a great source of nutrition. Try these Persimmon Muffins for a great way to use up this delicious fruit!
The vegetable harvest season has ramped up in the Lockyer Valley, so we are seeing an increase in leafy green vegetables from the region which will continue throughout winter, like Iceberg Lettuce when used in the right salads can also be a winter dish, like this hearty Winter Italian Chopped Salad!
Broccoli from Lockyer Valley is a great staple vegetable with a variety of serving options that can be added to your meals in so many creative ways. Whether you steam, char or roast it, Broccoli brings you so many great nutritional benefits. Enjoy Broccoli in this Braised Greens and Butterbean Crostini dish that’s great for the cooler months.
Cheap, nutritious and readily available, Lockyer Valley Cabbage is a great local pick. While it was a healthy addition for salads in the warmer months, finely sliced Cabbage can make for a wonderful crunch in slaw to accompany roasts and meat dishes. Use fresh Cabbage in this aromatic Lamb Koftas with Slaw.
Also from the Lockyer Valley, Cauliflower is in good supply. It is high in fibre, vitamins C and K, and various antioxidants, making it a low-calorie option that can be enjoyed roasted, mashed, or in soups and stews. Include Zucchini from Bundaberg to make these delicious Cauliflower, Zucchini and Halloumi Fritters!
