Queensland-grown fresh vegetables hand selected from the Brisbane Markets are front and centre at your local fruit and veg shop this week, and as winter sticks around, it’s time to embrace comforting winter warmers. It’s also a great time to stay indoors and cook up a storm, or get the kids involved with cooking.
The Bowen Gumlu region is continuing to see excellent growing conditions with many winter vegetables still in great supply such as Eggplant which is our pick of the week. Available in standard varieties as well as the striking Graffiti, you can cook Eggplant over an open flame or roast to really enhance the flavour and add a smoky flavour to this wonderful vegetable! If you’re after a delicious starter for your next dinner party, try these Stuffed Eggplant Fritters.
Zucchini is another Bowen Gumlu bred winter favourite that is still in good supply. It is a great vegetable to add to your weeknight roasts or to your morning fritters, but Zucchini really shines in this Zucchini Lasagne that the whole family will love.
Bowen and Bundaberg regions are still producing an abundance of Capsicum as well as Gourmet Tomatoes this week. Together, they can make this amazing Chunky Tomato and Capsicum Soup which is sure to be an excellent winter pick me up that will warm you from the inside out.
Among the standouts from Bundaberg this week are Snow Peas. Perfectly sweet and crunchy, snow peas are a wonderful addition to a simple salad with roast veg and feta! They can also be steamed gently and make a great accompaniment to your dinner meals!
Cauliflower from the Lockyer Valley and Celery from Victoria and the Lockyer Valley are also making their mark this week at your local fruit and veg shop. For the perfect meat-free meal why not try these Roast Cauliflower Steaks with Pear and Pepita Salad.
There is a great supply of Sunshine Coast Ginger coming in this week, perfect to help fight off winter germs and viruses. Ginger is also known to help relieve nausea and reduce pain and tastes great in these winter favourite Ginger Pear Pies.
While winter vegetables have been taking centre stage, there are still some fruits that are great eating and well-priced this week like Navel Oranges from Mundubbera in Queensland and also from Victoria. Why not stock up and make some Orange Marmalade for your morning toast.
Mandarins from the Burnett region and from Victoria are a readily available kid-friendly favourite this week, with many varieties on offer and the perfect size for snacking! Their easy-peel skin means there’s little barrier for popping in the lunchbox and ensuring there’s less mess and the fruit stays fresher for longer. Pick up a bunch of Mandarins this week and make a refreshing salad for lunch with this recipe for Mandarin and Pork Salad.
North Queensland Rockmelons are also in good supply and great eating this week. Rockmelons are a good source of potassium, vitamin B and vitamin C. Celebrate in style this weekend with these Rockmelon and Prosciutto Skewers.
Green and Gold varieties of Kiwifruit from New Zealand are also great eating this week. Kiwifruit offers plenty of antioxidants and fibre to aid digestion and boost the immune system. They are also great as part of a winter BBQ on these Grilled Chicken and Kiwifruit Skewers.
