Brisbane Produce Report – 18 May

  May 18, 2023  adonaldson

Are you craving the vibrant flavours of fresh and seasonal produce to enhance your cooking? Your local fruit and veg shop is the ultimate destination! Embrace the chilly weather as an opportunity to relish comforting meals, utilising the diverse range of quality fruits and vegetables that are in season, sourced from the Brisbane Markets

Our pick of the week is Hass Avocados. While you may see less Shepard Avocados now, the Hass Avocado season has started in Bundaberg, ensuring there is plenty of supply of this nutritious treat. For a healthy, hearty meal, make this Pumpkin, Beef and Black Bean Chilli with Avocado Salsa. It will go well with Lockyer Valley Kent Pumpkins that are also in season.

This is a great time of year for leafy green vegetables also coming from Lockyer Valley, like Broccoli, which is loaded with nutrients and can be enjoyed in a variety of creative ways. Our Chicken and Broccoli Bolognese is a great way to pack in some vitamins while enjoying a comforting meal.

Capsicums from Bundaberg have been benefiting from good growing weather and remain in good supply and quality. If you like your Capsicums sweeter, select those with deep red, glossy skin and make this flavoursome Creamy Capsicum Pasta.

The colder weather means many households are turning to hearty winter meals. With readily available ingredients like CarrotsOnions and Celery, you can make a base for any number of stews, slow cooker recipes or soups, like this Creamy Chicken and Broccoli Soup.

Coming from Mareeba, Red Papayas are good quality, great tasting, and a good price. Papaya is delicious in salads, added to sweets or snacked on alone. Need some inspiration on how to use Papaya this week? Try Baked Papaya as a healthy dessert option.

Pomegranates from Mary Valley are good quality and continue to make their way into the Market. This heart healthy fruit can aid in lowering cholesterol, reduce inflammation and is a healthy source of antioxidants. Entertaining this weekend? Try our Oven Roasted Eggplant, Pomegranate and Pecan Dip to share with guests.

You can still pick up Imperial Mandarins from Gayndah and Burnett at fantastic prices as this fruit is in abundance. Packed with vitamins A, B and C, Mandarins also help lower cholesterol and strengthen your bones. Try something different with this Mandarin Marmalade.

We are almost at the end of the Dragon Fruit season, but this week there’s a good supply coming from North Queensland. High in vitamin C, E, iron and magnesium, make the most of this exotic fruit before it’s out of season. A Dragon Fruit and Banana Smoothie is a delicious way to start the day.

Also coming in from North Queensland, you’re likely to find plenty of Watermelons in your local fruit and veg shop. Mix up this Watermelon, Rockmelon and Goats Cheese Salad and enjoy some melons this week.
