  • 24 August, 2023

It’s time to say farewell to winter, with spring right around the corner. The weather is already warming up with a range of seasonal spring produce already hitting the shelves of your local fruit and veg shop, sourced from the Brisbane Markets. Spring brings with it an abundance of delicious produce and the promise of warmer days, delicious summer produce and a fond farewell to the chilly weather!

Our pick of the week is Iceberg Lettuce coming in from Gatton where growing conditions are perfect, and supply is great with low prices. Iceberg Lettuce is crunchy, slightly sweet, and packed with vitamin K which has been shown to support bone, cognitive and heart health.

It’s also a great week for both Kent and Butternut Pumpkin in abundance from Bowen. Pumpkin is a great source of vitamin A which aids in cell growth, eye and bone health and immunity. Try out this Roast Pumpkin, Chestnut, Lentil and Feta Salad for a nutritious warm weather meal!

Gold Sweet Potato from Bundaberg is plentiful and is a delicious option that can be roasted, fried or made into a creamy mash. Try some today in these filling Loaded Sweet Potato Boats!

All Capsicum varieties are coming in strong from Bowen. If you’re entertaining this weekend, try this Creamy Dairy-Free Cashew and Roast Capsicum Dip.

Avocados are still in great supply coming in from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Packed with healthy fats and nutrients, Avocados are a food we should all include in our regular diet. For something a bit different, try these Chicken and Avocado Burgers.

Tomatoes are in abundance coming from multiple growing regions, especially Bowen. Make the most of the remaining cool nights and settle down in front of your favourite show with this Roasted Tomato Soup and some crusty bread or toasted sandwich.

Navel Oranges are coming in from New South Wales and are plentiful! One Orange can pack in around 10% of your daily intake of fibre and a whopping 92% of vitamin C! A high fibre diet aids in regularity and fuels beneficial gut bacteria, while vitamin C helps to keep your skin, bones and connective tissue healthy as well as helps your body absorb iron. Give this Orange Marmalade a try to put onto some warm scones or even as a glaze for your ham.

Other Citrus varieties are also in abundance such as Limes and Mandarins from Bundaberg. Both Limes and Mandarins are high in antioxidants and vitamin C – helping improve immunity, reduce heart disease risk factors, aid iron absorption and promote healthy skin. Try these Chargrilled Mushroom Tacos with Lime or this Mandarin Orange Chicken.

Passionfruit is still growing well in Gympie, keeping prices down. Passionfruit is a sweet, aromatic fruit perfect for desserts and drinks. Embrace the warmer weather by kicking back in the sun with a Passionfruit Gin and Tonic.
