RISBANE PRODUCE REPORT

28 JULY

  • 28 July, 2023

As a few harvest seasons change and overlap, there is a good supply of winter staples being sourced by your local fruit and veg shop through the Brisbane Markets at great prices. Head to your local independent for specials on Queensland grown leafy green vegetables, herbs, spices, and wonderfully sweet winter fruits.

Our pick of the week is Brushed Potatoes. With an overlap of growing regions sending their produce to the Market at present, there is an abundance of quality Brushed Potatoes coming from the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland and from New South Wales. Although the North Queensland season is only just starting, there are some unusually large potatoes, as big as a kilo, coming from this region – big enough to feed the whole family!

Other Potato varieties that are reigning supreme this week include Washed Potatoes which are of good quality and coming from South Australia, and Gold Sweet Potato still in abundance from Bowen. Whatever Potato you choose, you can’t go wrong with mash, especially if it’s part of this Avocado and Potato Mash with Steak. With local restaurants and cafes also sourcing their produce from the Brisbane Markets, why not dine out with a bowl of hand cut fries or roast potatoes this weekend.

You’ll also find plenty of Bowen-grown Sweet Corn at your local fruit and veg shop. Packed with vitamins C and A, dietary fibre, and iron, Corn is a great winter food and will go down a treat as part of this Potato Corn Chowder.

Coming in from Gatton, Celeriac is a fantastic winter veg. Celeriac has an enlarged solid, edible tuber that grows just below the ground. It can be peeled and cut in strips for a salad, peeled and cooked until tender and served with a butter or cream sauce, or added to soups and casseroles. For a delicious salad option try this Roast Celeriac with Buckwheat and Pomegranate Salad.

You’ll find plenty of fresh herbs and spices to add flavour to your meals this week. Keep an eye out for Shallots from the Lockyer Valley, Ginger from the Sunshine Coast, Turmeric from Bundaberg, and Coriander coming in from all directions, including Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast and Victoria.

The Lockyer Valley is also still pushing out an abundant supply of quality Broccoli and Cauliflower. Priced to sell, make these healthy vegetables a staple in your dinners with a simple Broccoli and Cauliflower Bake.

Bowen and Bundaberg regions are still producing a strong supply of Capsicum as well as Gourmet Tomatoes this week. Together, they can make this amazing Chunky Tomato and Capsicum Soup as a winter warmer.

Smooth and ultra creamy, Hass Avocados are still growing well in North Queensland and making their way to your local fruit and veg shop. Enjoy a flavoursome breakfast this weekend with Savoury French Toast with Avocado, Tomato and Bacon.

If you’re looking for something a little special, Figs from Glasshouse Mountains are great quality this week. A wonderfully sweet, colourful treat, try them in this Fig and Prosciutto Tart.

Strawberries from the Sunshine Coast are in season and we’re seeing more and more making their way into local fruit and veg shops. Why not get baking and try these Strawberry Cookies as a delicious snack on the go.

Pick up some citrus from your local fruit and veg shop this week. With plenty of options from Gayndah and Burnett grown Honey Murcott Mandarins, to Mundubbera grown Blood Oranges, and Limes from North Queensland, there’s a citrus for every occasion. Try something a little different with this Blood Orange and Strawberry Galette as a delicious little treat.

Green Kiwifruit from New Zealand are still great eating this week. Kiwifruit offers plenty of antioxidants and fibre to aid digestion and boost the immune system, and contain twice the vitamin C of an Orange. Pop them in the kids’ lunchbox with a spoon for a healthy, tasty snack.

Your local A better choice! fruit and veg shop hand picks their produce from the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea, which comes from thousands of Australian farms. Why not call in and see your local fruit and veg shop for the best quality, choice, freshness, and service available!
