Brisbane Produce Report – 22 June

Mushrooms are growing well in farms throughout the Scenic Rim, with Button, Flat and Swiss Brown varieties available at good prices. Also known as Chinese Cabbage, Wombok is growing well in the Lockyer Valley. The green leaves of this plant can have a slightly peppery taste while the thick ribs are sweet and juicy. CauliflowerBroccoli and Cabbage are still growing very well in the Lockyer Valley and are in the prime of their harvest season. So, make sure you take full advantage of the very low prices this week on these winter staples.

There’s a good harvest of Choko also coming from North Queensland. This fruit, also known as a vegetable pear, is an excellent source of dietary fibre and can be added to your favourite winter soups or casseroles. It also lasts longer when stored in an airtight plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Both Pineapple and Seedless Watermelon supply from North Queensland is going well, with affordable prices for these vitamin C rich fruits. If the weather is too cold to eat these juicy fruits as is, they can be cooked! Try your hand at Pan-Fried Pineapple or Prawns and Grilled Watermelon with Feta.

South Australian Quince is in peak winter supply at your local fruit and veg shop. Related to the Apple and Pear, Quince embraces the warming flavours of winter with strong, vanilla aromas, and though quite tart when eaten raw, it is a delicious baked treat. Mandarins are also a mainstay of winter harvest, coming from North Queensland, Marlborough and Gayndah. While the supply is starting to slow, there are still plenty coming in, keeping the price down on these sweet, healthy snacks.
