Brisbane Produce Report – 31 March

  March 30, 2023  adonaldson

Looking for fresh and seasonal produce for your meals? Look no further than your Local Fruit and Veg Shop! As the cooler weather sets in, indulge in some cosy meals using the abundance of excellent quality fruit and vegetables sourced from the Brisbane Markets and available at your local, independent A better choice! retailer this week.

Our pick of the week is the versatile Cabbage. With the wet weather causing some supply disruptions to leafy greens from the Lockyer Valley, Cabbage varieties such as Wombok, Red and Sugarloaf from Gatton are a great alternative. Cabbage is highly nutritious, while also being very low in calories, making it the perfect addition to many culinary delights. If you need some inspiration to make Cabbage the star of your next dinner, try our Sweet and Sour Pork with Cabbage Slaw!

Keep an eye out for Beetroot from South Australia while you’re at your local fruit and veg shop. When selecting Beetroot, choose smooth, firm roots with fresh stems and leaves. Looking for a new way to use fresh Beetroot? Make some Beetroot Crisps with Coriander Hommus for a delicious home-made snack – we guarantee the kids will love this pretty pink crisps!

Locally grown Corn and Beans from the Greater Brisbane region are a delicious way to add colour to your plate this week. Both Corn and Beans can be steamed or boiled and added as a side to your dinner, or if you want to impress, then head to the kitchen and give our Corn Cakes with Yellow Capsicum Relish a try.

Leek from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales has picked up in quality and supply, making it an excellent addition to your Autumn meals. Leek can be used to replace Onions in a recipe to give a slightly sweeter and milder flavour, and the white base is often eaten raw. If you’re looking to dive into soup season, look no further than our Potato, Leek and Bacon Soup.

New season Gourmet Tomatoes from Bundaberg are excellent eating, and boast an impressive yield of vitamins C, E and A in every serve. Whether using it in a salad, sandwich, soup, sauce or any other dish, the Tomato is sure to find a place in your trolley this week. For the entertainers, try this Savoury Tomato Parmesan Galette as an appetiser or light lunch for a small gathering.

Despite recent cyclonic weather in the region disrupting the supply of Mandarins and Oranges, there is no shortage of Northern Queensland Lemons and Limes at your local fruit and veg shop. Lemons and Limes are classic additions to marinades, and their juices add a flavour kick to any meal they’re squeezed fresh on to. Try using these tropical delights in baked treats as well, like this White Chocolate and Lime Cheesecake.

If you’re looking to try something new this week, Jujubes from South Australia and Victoria have just come in to season! Also known as a Chinese Date, these little fruits have a unique flavour, and can be eaten as a snack, making them the perfect pick for the adventurous eaters this week. If you need a hand on preparation and storage tips, be sure to ask your knowledgeable, local A better choice! retailer.

Apples are always a classic option, especially for kids’ lunchboxes or a refreshing fruit salad. While the supply of some varieties of red Apples have been affected by hail in Shepparton, green varieties from Stanthorpe have started arriving on shelves, so pick some up for that crisp, new-season crunch. Add Apples to your dinner plans this week with our Sticky Pork Ribs with Apple and Pine Nut Salad

New-season Pears are also coming into the Brisbane Markets, with the Corella variety starting from Stanthorpe. They’re an excellent source of Vitamin C and dietary fibre, and perfect for snacking. Get baking this week and make these easy Ginger Pear Pies at home this week!
