Brisbane Produce Report – 21 October

  October 21, 2022  adonaldson

As we hit the midway point of Spring, we’re celebrating the very best of seasonal produce at your local fruit and veg shop! This week sees a variety of veg, fruit and herbs making their way to your local, independent fruit and veg shop. Fill your trolley with an assortment of flavourful options which are as tasty as they are healthy, for you and your family. Whether you’re into stir fry or smoothies, your local fruit and veg shop has everything you need to make a tasty meal. Variety is the spice of life!

Our pick of the week this week are Bananas which are in good supply from the Far North Queensland. Try this great Banana Snickers Bites recipe out on the kids. Quick, easy, delicious and healthy (they never need to know!). Or just throw a couple in your morning smoothie for long lasting energy.

Yellow Nectarines from South Burnett are starting to appear on the shelves of your local fruit and veg shop this week. These small, fuzzless fruit have a sweet, succulent flavour and can be enjoyed as a snack, dessert or even in a savoury salad. We will begin to see White Nectarines and Yellow and White Peaches in abundance in the next few weeks too, just in time for the festive season.

The more exotic Pawpaw from Dimbulah and Innisfail are in abundance this week at your local fruit and veg shop. Pawpaw has a rich golden flesh, with a distinctive, smooth skin and smell. Choose a fruit that is well-shaped, mainly yellow and unbruised. Pawpaw is a tasty breakfast option on their own or can be the star of the show in a fruit salad.

Melons from North Queensland are still great value this week, and there are plenty of options on offer including Watermelon, Honeydew and Rockmelon. Melons are a great snack to pack in the lunchbox or to serve at your weekend picnics or lunches. Feeling a little fancy? Make this Rockmelon & Cucumber Prawn Cocktails at your next dinner party!

Granny Smith Apples are in steady supply, coming in from Stanthorpe. Apples are the ideal portable, hunger busting snack. If you are on the go and need a quick, healthy pick me up, Apples are the best! Packed full of antioxidants and dietary fibre, Apples are often known as the “miracle food”. It’s no surprise then, that they are the most consumed fruit in the world!

Pumpkin varieties including Queensland BlueGrey, Kent and Butternut are in good supply and are available at your local fruit and veg shop! These are a fun way to decorate your home for the spooky season, and carving pumpkins is a fun activity to do with the kids! Choose your favourite variety and carve out the spookiest face this Halloween!

Asian greens including Bok Choy are in abundance and coming in from Belmont and Gatton. Bok Choy translates as “white vegetable” in Cantonese and is a great source of vitamin C and dietary fibre. Steam, stir fry or boil Bok Choy and the result is a nutritious lunch or dinner. Try this wok tossed Calamari and Bok Choy Stir Fry.

Delicious, large, shiny Eggplants from Bundaberg are still in steady supply at your local fruit and veg shop. Why not try this Stuffed Eggplant recipe with Garlic and Tomatoes which are also in good supply and great value for a healthy mid-week meal.

The Lockyer Valley is producing an abundance of Red Cabbage. Great for tasty coleslaw recipes. Pork and Apple Slaw Burgers are an ideal option for the family dinner table this week. The recipe includes Red Cabbage, Lettuce, Apple and Parsley to name a few of our fresh options on offer this week.

There is a good supply of fresh herbs from the Greater Brisbane Region in store this week including DillCoriander and Parsley. Herbs are an easy way to enhance a recipe and improve your gut health. There are lots of great recipes that use a variety of herbs but start with adding some to your favorite salad.  Get experimenting now and make a salad exciting!
