Brisbane Produce Report – 7 October

  October 6, 2022  adonaldson

As the nights get shorter and the days longer, it’s important to stay on top of a healthy sleep pattern. Eating well has an impact on how your body functions, including how you sleep. Having an adequate diet filled with whole foods and fresh fruit and vegetables helps to support the brain in producing neurotransmitters which are the key to a good night’s rest. Find a wealth of seasonal produce at your local fruit and veg shop and improve your nightly slumber.

Our pick of the week is Red Chillies from Bundaberg and Bowen. Chillies are known to lower blood sugar, improve heart health, and reduce inflammation. Add Chillies to spice up your favourite dish or try these Loaded Carrot Fries with Chilli Cheese Beef for something deliciously different.

Hass Avocados from Brisbane, Mount Binga and Gunalda are in good supply and are the perfect addition to any meal of the day. When selecting Avocados, gently press around the top of the fruit, not the belly to avoid bruising. Fasten the ripening process by storing Avocados in a paper bag on the countertop with a Banana. You can thank us later!

Available all year round, Mushrooms pull their weight for nutritional value! When exposed to sunlight, Mushrooms can provide you with 100% of your vitamin D intake. Take advantage of the benefits of Mushrooms grown locally in Mount Cotton and try this delicious Miso Roast Mushroom Bowl recipe.

Broccoli from Lowood and the Lockyer Valley is still in great supply this week. Full of essential fibre and protein as well as vitamin C, vitamin K and iron, Broccoli is a great option to include in your diet. This Broccoli Tabbouleh is a great way to use up Broccoli and is a simple salad to take in your lunchbox.

Cucumber from the greater Brisbane and Gatton regions are also in abundance this week. High in nutrients and antioxidants, Cucumbers can be eaten a variety of ways – eaten sliced and raw, in salads like this Cucumber Salad, or as an accompaniment to Indian curries.

Change up the way you cook with Asparagus from Victoria this week and try this delicious Spiced Coconut Chicken with Asparagus. Asparagus is a highlight of the season and is not to be missed. Pick up a bunch at your local fruit and veg shop this week.

Mangoes from the Northern Territory are still of excellent quality this week. The strong aroma and golden cheeks of Mangoes are a delightful indication of the changing weather and are perfect to add to your weekend lunch spreads. For a melt-in-your-mouth desert try this Mango Mousse recipe.

Rock your world this week with delicious Rockmelon from Far North Queensland! Rockmelons are sweet and juicy, high in water content and a great source of potassium, vitamin B and vitamin C. Try Rockmelon Frosé for your next party trick!

Afourer Mandarins from the southern states of New South Wales and South Australia are still going strong. Mandarins are perfect choices to pop in the kids’ lunchboxes as a snack or to take along to weekend sports to keep everyone happy. If you’re after a fun drink to make, try this Mandarin Daiquiri!

Berry lovers rejoice! Despite the rain last weekend, there is still a good supply of Strawberries at your local fruit and veg shop. Grown in the Caboolture and Sunshine Coast regions, Strawberries are great with Blueberries and Raspberries on top of fresh Pavlova.
