Brisbane Produce Report – 30 September

  September 29, 2022  adonaldson

As the days get warmer, you will see a new wave of seasonal fresh produce hit your local fruit and veg retailer. To keep your body energised as things heat up, it’s important to maintain a healthy, balanced diet full of fresh fruit and vegetables!

Our pick of the week this week is Mangoes which are just coming into season from the Northern Territory. The symbolic first tray of the season was auctioned at the Brisbane Produce Market this week raising $20,000 for charity with Sam Etri taking the title of Mango Monarch. Be sure to pick up some Mangoes this season from Sam’s stores at Skippy’s Fresh Frootz in Victoria Point, Skippy’s Farmhouse in Southport and his new store opening soon, Skippy’s Market Fresh in Rothwell.

Mangoes contain over 20 different vitamins and minerals, making them a superfood. They aid digestion and are a good snack to take on the go after a workout to replace lost potassium. Try this Mango Ice-Cream Tart to cool things down as the days heat up!

Another summer flavour which has just come into season is Watermelon from the Northern Territory! This delightful snack is fat-free and can help keep you hydrated. Pair Watermelon with Mango in a fruit salad or try something different with this Watermelon Mint and Feta Salad!

Navel Oranges from Victoria are still great value this week. Citrus is an essential part of a cooking palate, adding a burst of tangy sweetness and zesty punch! Add Oranges to your favourite salads for a bright burst of flavour or add the juice into a sauce or dressing! Try our Radish Salad with Orange Dressing this week.

Pick up a bunch of Bananas from Innisfail this week as a perfect snack to take on the go with your weekend activities, or to top off your brekky! Try these Peanut Butter and Banana Protein Bars and take them with you on a hike, or along to the kids sporting events for a protein-packed snack the whole family will love.

Berries continue to be great value this week with Blueberries from Coffs Harbour and Strawberries from the Sunshine Coast available at your local Fruit and Veg retailer!

In veggies this week, Asparagus from Victoria is still at its best. You may find both green and special white varieties at your local Fruit and Veg retailer. Add a twist to your next chicken and rice dish with this Chicken and Asparagus Bowl!

Snow Peas from Bundaberg and Victoria are still in plentiful supply this week. Full of vitamin C and dietary fibre to aid digestion, Snow Peas have a slightly sweet flavour making them the perfect addition to your spring dishes. Snow peas are a great accompaniment to evening meals, served as a side dish sauteed with Garlic, or added to pasta salads or stir fry.

Pick up a head of Cauliflower from the Lockyer Valley this week and whip up this  for the family or your weekend barbeque.

Green leafy vegetables from the Lockyer Valley, Brisbane and Logan are still good value this week including Kale, Iceberg and Cos Lettuce, Rocket, Spinach and Asian greens such as Bok Choy and Chinese Broccoli. There is also a great supply of Silverbeet coming from Stanthorpe. Whip up a healthy stir-fry packed with your favourite leafy greens for a healthy boost this week.
