Brisbane Produce Report – 23 September

  September 22, 2022  adonaldson

With the NRL Finals Series underway, and the AFL Grand Final weekend upon us, it’s time to plan and prepare some delicious meals for family and friends this weekend with fresh seasonal produce.

Our pick of the week this week is a spring favourite, Asparagus from Victoria. Asparagus is dense with nutrition and pairs well with other spring vegetables like Garlic, Potatoes, and Peas. When selecting Asparagus at your local Fruit and Veg retailer, look for a bright green colour with firm stems. After a delicious recipe with Asparagus as the star? Try these Asparagus and Lemon Ricotta Crepes for a light and tasty spring treat!

Pineapple is a great sweet yet tangy option to celebrate the warm weather. Grown throughout sunny North Queensland, Yeppoon, Wide Bay-Burnett, Sunshine Coast and Wamuran, Pineapple can be blended into smoothies or cooked into your favourite baked treat. Have some fun with the kids and make these Pineapple Fruit Boats these school holidays for a fun way to eat your fruit!

Whether you plan on watching the grand final or not, get your Banana kick on this weekend! Cavandish Bananas from North Queensland have been thriving in this warmer Spring weather. They are in good supply this week at your local fruit and veg retailer and are starting to put their yellow summer jerseys back on. They are a great snack to have on the go or you can kick some goals for the family with this Rhubarb and Banana Bread recipe!

Blueberries from Coffs Harbour and across New South Wales are great value this week, so there’s no excuse not to pick up a punnet in your shop. These Blueberry, Banana & Pepita Oat Bars are a great snack to prepare in advance and take on the go! Blueberries are an excellent Spring option, loaded with antioxidants and vitamins to keep your body healthy and fuelled.

Rockmelons from North Queensland are good eating and are increasing in supply this week. Rockmelons have high water content and low-calorie count. They are a good source of potassium, vitamin B and vitamin C. Try these Rockmelon and Prosciutto Skewers to celebrate with friends while watching the game!

A spring favourite, Broad Beans from New South Wales are just starting to come into supply! Once de-podded and cooked, Broad Beans are great as an addition to salads, or re-heated and stirred through pasta! They also go well with your favourite Zucchinis from Bundaberg or Corn from Bowen to make delicious fritters or a tasty dip.

Broccoli and Baby Broccoli out of the Lockyer Valley are both of great quality now. Packed with nutrients and flavour, these brassicas are not to be skipped over at your local Fruit and Veg retailer! Try this Marinated Lentils with Baby Broccoli and Feta recipe this week!

Asian Veg is of great quality, with Bok Choy and Pak Choy from Logan Reserve and Gatton as well as the wider Lockyer Valley region in abundance right now. Perfect for your weekly stir fry or quickly cooked through with some bold flavours to accompany fish and rice or noodles.

Gourmet Tomatoes out of Bowen and Bundaberg are in steady supply right now. Fresh tomatoes are an ideal salad vegetable, served sliced or cut in wedges, either alone or in combination with Lettuce, Asparagus, Celery, Cucumbers and Onions. There are also a large range of leafy greens in good supply to choose from at your local fruit and veg retailer this week so why not drop in and pick some up!
