Brisbane Produce Report – 16 September

  September 15, 2022  adonaldson

As we roll into the school holidays, it’s essential to keep the family nourished and energised for school holiday activities! Teach the kids a new skill and get them to cook in the kitchen this week. Familiarising the kids with fresh produce will teach them to love eating fresh fruit and vegetables to stay happy and healthy!

Our pick of the week this week is Blueberries from Mundubbera. Full of rich antioxidants and vitamins, Blueberries are the perfect snack every day of the week! Blueberries are an excellent choice for little hands, and they are fun to bake with, too! Enjoy a refreshing drink as the weather warms up with our Blueberry Moscow Mule Mocktail!

Pick up some crunchy Apples this week, with seasonal Gala Apples on offer as well as your other favourites such as Fuji, Red Delicious, Pink Lady and Granny Smith! Grown in Stanthorpe, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, there is a plentiful supply at your local fruit and veg retailer this week. Try using Apples in a salad to accompany meats such as Pork or Fish for a slightly sweet boost of flavour to compliment your meals.

With the same crunch as an Apple but technically a Pear, Nashi from Victoria is also in steady supply this time of year. Nashis are great used in desserts, fruit and cheese platters, or eaten fresh.

Navel Oranges from South Australia and New South Wales are also of excellent quality this week! A fun activity the kids can enjoy in the kitchen is making your own freshly squeezed Orange juice for breakfast.

There are also plenty of Afourer Mandarins at your local fruit and veg retailer this week. These seedless and easy to peel varieties are great for a snack attack or in this Salted Chocolate Mandarin Tart!

Full of healthy heart-friendly monosaturated fats, Avocados from Central Queensland and Blackbutt are still in excellent supply this week. We love Avocados as a topper for toast or tossed in salads, but they’re also a great addition to your favourite smoothies! Our Avocado and Banana Smoothie is a favourite to make with the kids!

Boonah-grown English Spinach and its close relative Silverbeet are also in abundance this week. Both are a good source of dietary fibre, vitamin A and folic acid. Why not take the kids on a picnic these holidays and whip up some  Spinach and Ricotta Picnic Bites.

Broccoli from Gympie and the Lockyer Valley is your friend, with plenty of nutritional benefits including vitamin K, vitamin C, protein and magnesium for a strong body and keeping your immune system healthy. Make Broccoli the star of the dinner table this week with our Roast Broccoli Salad with Spicy Tahini Dressing.

Stanthorpe-grown Lo Bok is also a great choice this week. With a mild Radish-like flavour, Lo Bok is a perfect addition to your salad or stir fry and is particularly popular in Japanese cuisine.

Add a bit of colour to your plate with Bundaberg and Gympie-grown Yellow Squash. Squash is said to be among the oldest edible plants grown by people in the Americas, are a very good source of vitamin C and A and are low in sodium. For a perfect breakfast in bed have the kids make this Simple Squash Frittata.

Spring is the season for a variety of fresh Brisbane-grown herbs. Find a selection of MintDillChivesCoriander and Parsley at your local Fruit and Veg retailer.
