Brisbane Produce Report – 2 September

  September 1, 2022  adonaldson

Spring is finally here this week and with the promise of warmer weather arrives the promise of new fruit and vegetable varieties coming in season and fresh from the farm straight to the Brisbane Markets® at Rocklea and onto the shelves of your local Fruit and Veg retailer.

Our pick of the week is juicy and vibrant Bowen-grown Corn. The sweet flavour of Corn is a delightful addition to your meals and is of excellent quality and in steady supply this week. Corn is a most satisfying vegetable snack ideal for picnics or school lunches as well as a side dish for barbeques. Make Corn the star of the table this week with our Mexican Corn Salad.

Juicy and sweet Pineapple from the Glasshouse Mountains is of good quality this week and is a delicious snack that gives us a taste of the warmer weather to come! Blend into a smoothie or juicy for a zesty morning pick-me-up or add cubed Pineapple to your favourite stir-fry this week.

Strawberries from the Sunshine Coast are still in great supply and taste amazingly sweet. However, with the rain around of late, supply is likely to drop off a little over the next week. Strawberries taste perfect fresh as they are, and are also great in baked goods like these Strawberry Muffins, which are a good way to use up your Strawberries if you’ve accidentally bought more than you can eat in a sitting!

Red Grapefruit from South Australia and Victoria is a lovely citrus that has a sweet flavour that compliments a light and refreshing salad or can be added to juices or cocktails like this Gin and Grapefruit Cocktail for a burst of flavour.

There is also a good supply of Bananas from Tully, Innisfail and Mareeba coming into your local fruit and veg retailer this week. Bananas are nutritious, delicious, and convenient and their high potassium content makes them perfect snacks for long-lasting energy throughout their day. Start your day the right way with these Banana Raisin Pancakes!

Launching into spring means green vegetables are in good supply with a wide variety available. Pick up some Bundaberg-grown Snow Peas again this week and keep your dinner table alive.

Broccoli from Gatton is in steady supply and is of great quality this week. Broccoli is rich in nutrients and vitamins and makes for a great side dish to compliment dinner. For something different as a light meal or snack why not try these Broccoli and Halloumi Fritters.

Be sure to pick up some Zucchini this week as they are also in excellent supply. Zucchini is grown in North Queensland and has a neutral flavour that can suit a variety of flavours and cuisines. Enjoy Zucchini roasted and added to salads or sliced up into a Spring-time Frittata with your favourite vegetables and herbs.

Green Beans from Gympie are plentiful this week and have come back in price. They are a great option to add to your weekly shop. Simply prepare with Garlic and seasoning and serve with steak or fish, or try this Green Bean, Fig & Feta Salad to help mark the start of Spring.

Your local A better choice! fruit and veg retailer hand picks their produce from the Brisbane Markets® at Rocklea which comes from thousands of local farms. Why not call in and see your local A better choice! retailer this week for the best quality, choice, freshness, and service available!
