Brisbane Produce Report – 12 August

  August 11, 2022  adonaldson

With Spring just a few weeks away, we’re getting eager for a new season of exciting meals and more options coming to the shelves of your local Fruit and Veg shop this week!

Our pick of the week is Snow Peas from Bundaberg. They are still in steady supply and are a good source of dietary fibre, protein, vitamin B, B2, B3, C and folic acid. The snow pea was developed in China thousands of years ago and is still used in Chinese cuisine today. Why not try this Tofu and Snow Pea Stir Fry for a quick and easy, tasty dinner.

Taro from North Queensland is also in good supply. Taro can be used in the same way as Potato – roasted, baked, boiled, or fried. It has been a staple part of the diet for South Pacific Islanders for centuries and is nutritious, packed with vitamins A and C, and a good source of dietary fibre and complex carbohydrate.

Gatton-grown Sugarloaf Cabbage are in steady supply and prices are starting to improve. Sugarloaf is an heirloom cabbage variety which has an excellent mild flavour and is sweeter than some other types of cabbage. It is great used raw in salads and coleslaw.

Broccoli from Gatton is reducing in price, and we couldn’t be happier to be making the most of this beautiful brassica. Whip up this Broccoli Hashbrown Bake to add in some greens to an old-school classic!

Eggplant from North Queensland is a delicious vegetable in steady supply (we know, it’s technically a fruit!)  and rivals Potato as comfort food in our eyes! Eggplant has a wonderful flavour that compliments a variety of dishes. We love making these Eggplant Croquettes, which are perfect for fussy eaters.

Sunshine Coast-grown Strawberries are coming into full swing and make for the perfect lunchbox snack. Try our take on the famous Ekka Strawberry Sundae which is guaranteed to brighten your day!

Papaya from the Atherton Tablelands and Far North Queensland Coast are of excellent quality, are in steady supply, and well-priced this week.  You can eat them fresh as a breakfast fruit combined with Passionfruit which is also in great supply. As a main, Papaya can accompany veal, chicken, or seafood. For a sweet and healthy desert, why not try Baked Papaya, with a squeeze of Lemon or Lime.

North Queensland and Bundaberg-grown Melons are delicious this week, with a range of Rockmelon and Honeydew Melon to make a yummy fruit salad after dinner!

Try seasonal Cumquats from your local Fruit and Veg shop! Cumquats grown in Gayndah are a small citrus with an intense flavour that goes well in jams or preserves for a delicious addition to a cheese board.

Your local A better choice! fruit and veg retailer hand picks their produce from the Brisbane Markets® at Rocklea which comes from thousands of local farms. Why not call in and see your local A better choice! retailer this week for the best quality, choice, and freshness available!
