Brisbane Produce Report – 5 August

  August 4, 2022  adonaldson

In anticipation of the Ekka festivities and upcoming public holiday, your local fruit and veg shop has a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables to fulfil all your entertaining and snacking needs.

Our pick of the week is Carrots from Kalbar. An affordable and versatile vegetable in good supply year-round, Carrots are loaded with vitamin A and beta-carotene – known to lower the risk of diabetes. For the ultimate winter treat, try our recipe for Spiced Carrot Soup with Ginger Raita.

Cauliflower from Gatton is in great supply this week due to recent warmer temperatures. Low in calories and high in fibre, it’s a popular substitute for vegies with high carbohydrate counts. Keep a look out for Gatton-grown Romanesco at your local fruit and veg shop this week. A Cauliflower and Broccoli hybrid, Romanesco has a mild and nutty flavour.

Kipfler Potatoes out of Atherton are in good supply this week. Originally from Germany, Kipfler Potatoes are a great source of complex carbohydrates, which help rebuild energy supply in the body. They’re great for roasting, baking or boiling, but due to their low starch content, they are not recommended for mashing or frying.

Available throughout the year, Beetroot from Gatton is in moderate supply right now. It’s a great source of essential vitamins and minerals – from vitamin B9 and manganese to potassium, iron and vitamin C.

Mushrooms from Victoria are in steady supply. A good source of protein, Mushrooms are a popular meat substitute and are the only vegan non-fortified dietary source of vitamin D. Try our delicious Ricotta Stuffed Mushrooms recipe.

Bundaberg-grown Zucchini and Sweet Potato are widely available this week. Whilst Zucchinis have a lower calorie and carbohydrate count, Sweet Potatoes are richer in calcium, potassium and magnesium. If you’re after quick, easy and tasty meal ideas, look no further than our recipes for Sweet Potato Fritters and Zucchini Noodles.

Passionfruit from Mareeba is in steady supply. An excellent source of dietary fibre and vitamin C, Passionfruit can be eaten from the shell, used in baking or juices. When buying Passionfruit, avoid wrinkled, dry or blemished skin.

Pineapples from the Sunshine Coast are in great supply right now. Known as the king of fruits, a Pineapple takes three years to reach maturity. High in vitamin C, they’re a great remedy for colds and flu. Another Sunshine Coast-grown fruit widely available this week are Strawberries. They’re in season in Queensland until October, so now’s a great time to pop a punnet of locally grown Strawberries in your shopping basket.

Red Grapefruit from Mundubbera is still in good supply. Rich in nutrients, antioxidants and fibre, Grapefruit can help lower the risk of heart disease and improve immunity. For a refreshing cocktail, try our Grapefruit and Sage Paloma.

Pears from Victoria are in excellent supply, with Packham, Josephine and Red Angel varieties widely available. If you’re after a delicious plant-based recipe, this Cauliflower and Pear Soup is a winner.

Innisfail-grown Bananas are in moderate supply this week. With lower levels of supply and demand at this time of year, Banana peels tend to lose their bright yellow glow during winter. Their flavour and taste are not affected.

Head to your local fruit and veg shop for great quality fresh produce and top-notch service. It’s A better choice! for you, your family and your community.
