Brisbane Produce Report – 29 July

  July 28, 2022  strump

If you’re feeling nostalgic and want to recreate your most treasured family recipes, your local fruit and veg shop has a wide range of high-quality fresh produce to help you whip up your Nana’s most popular dish.

Our pick of the week is Rhubarb from Toowoomba. In steady supply year-round, Rhubarb is a vegetable that is often mistaken for a fruit. Its edible stalks can be used for baking, cocktails, salads or jam. For a delicious winter treat, try our Rhubarb and Custard Flan.

Snow Peas from Bundaberg are also in steady supply. With one cup of Snow Peas providing more than 100% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, they can help protect against winter colds and flu.

Broccoli from Gatton has been steadily increasing in supply. Labelled a superfood, Broccoli is low in calories and high in nutritional value. It has a short shelf-life, so keeping it refrigerated below 5°C is essential. Gatton-grown Cauliflower is also increasing in availability this week. Like Broccoli, it is low in calories and rich in nutrients. For a weeknight meal featuring both vegies, give our recipe for Broccoli and Cauliflower Bake a go!

Zucchini from Bundaberg is in good supply. A healthier alternative to carbohydrates in meals, Zucchini bread, noodles, chips, rice or pasta offer more flavour and less calories. Sweet Potatoes, also from Bundaberg, are in excellent supply right now. With options to bake, boil, steam or fry them, Sweet Potatoes offer great versatility and nutritional value.

Widely available vegies sourced interstate this week include Brussel Sprouts and Fennel from Victoria, Carrots from Western Australia and Dutch Carrots from South Australia. These vegies can be used in a plethora of tasty main dishes or sides, to help you reach your recommended intake of five servings of vegetables each day.

Tomatoes from Bundaberg are in good supply this week. A major dietary source of lycopene, Tomatoes can help improve eye health, reduce high blood pressure and prevent gallstones. If you’re after a dish that showcases this fruit in all its glory, you need to try our Roasted Tomato Soup.

Quinces from South Australia are near the end of their season, so now’s a great time to get your hands on some. With a somewhat sour flavour, the fragrance of a Quince is often likened to a delicate combination of Pear, Apple and Citrus. When buying Quince, look for ones that are plump, hard and evenly coloured.

Citrus fruits are still in abundance, with Mundubbera producing a large proportion in Queensland. This week you can enjoy Mundubbera-grown MandarinsRuby Grapefruit and Blood Oranges, and Tangelos from South Australia.

Fuji Apples from Stanthorpe are in excellent supply and of great value this week. Originating in Japan in the 1930s, this Apple variety is crisp and juicy with a sugary-sweet flavour akin to fresh Apple juice. For a creative spin on the classic Apple juice, try our recipe for Strawberry and Apple Juice.

Papaya and Paw Paw out of Innisfail are in good supply at your local independent retailer. Different varieties of the same species from the Americas, these exotic fruits are rich in vitamins A and C and contain papain which aids in the digestion of protein.

Your local fruit and veg shop are committed to providing your community with freshness, quality and service that’s second to none. That’s why shopping at your local A better choice! retailer is the best choice for you and your family.
