Brisbane Produce Report – 8 July

  July 8, 2022  strump

As the school holidays wrap up and we prepare for the impending school rush, your local fruit and veg shop has a great range of fresh and high-quality produce to keep the whole family happy.

Our pick of the week are Pineapples from Yengarie and the Sunshine Coast. Widely available year-round, Pineapples are a great source of vitamin C and are known to ease inflammation. Their use as a pizza topping can cause controversy, but our homemade Mini Pineapple Pizzas are a sure-fire winner for kids lunches or a quick and easy family dinner.

Strawberries from Wamuran have been in shorter than expected supply due to the unusually cooler weather in Queensland this year, but supply is steadily increasing. The Queensland strawberry season predominantly runs from May to October, so you can expect to find great quality Strawberries in abundance over the coming months.

Tangelos from Mundubbera are having their time in the sun right now, in season until late August. A cross between a Mandarin and Grapefruit, Tangelos have a sweet flavour, and are typically juicy and fleshy. Other Mundubbera-grown citrus fruit in good supply this week are Lemons and Royal Honey Murcott Mandarins.

Hass Avocados out of the Glasshouse Mountains continue to impress with their creamy texture and nutty flavour. In bountiful supply at this time of year, you’ll find high quality Avocados at great prices at your local independent retailer this week. If you want to take lunches to the next level, try our recipe for Avocado and Smoked Salmon Sushi.

Capsicums from Bowen are plentiful this week, with a wide range of colours available. Low in calories and rich in vitamins, Capsicums may be the perfect afternoon tea snack to keep you going. If you’re entertaining this week, our Roasted Capsicum Bruschetta with Halloumi recipe is a winning appetizer.

Kalbar-grown Snacking Carrots are the lunchbox snack you never knew you needed until now. Developed to mature at 10cm, they’re a quick and healthy snack that the whole family will enjoy. Tasmanian-grown Carrots are also in good supply this week. High in nutritional value, 100g of Carrots make up more than 70% of your daily intake of vitamin A.

Potatoes from South Australia are in abundance this week and are a great source of potassium and magnesium. Sweet Potatoes from Bundaberg are commonly mentioned as a healthy alternative to Potatoes, and whilst both vegies have similar nutritional value and calorie counts, Sweet Potato is richer in vitamin A.

Swede from Tasmania is in good supply this week at your local independent retailer. Apart from being low in carbohydrates, it helps improve digestion and cardiovascular health. Brussels Sprouts from South Australia are also low in carbohydrates with high nutritional value. They’re in moderate supply this week, with supply expected to increase over the coming weeks. If you need a winning winter dish, our recipe for Brussels Sprouts in Pecan Sauce always gets top marks!

Ginger from the Sunshine Coast is in excellent supply this week. Known to help your body fight chronic diseases like heart disease and high blood pressure, this superfood also promotes healthy aging. If you’re a lover of flavour-filled sweet treats, our recipe for Australian Gingernut Cookies will satisfy your cravings.
