Brisbane Produce Report – 24 June

  June 23, 2022  adonaldson

Making better food choices makes a difference to your health and wellbeing. Your local fruit and veg shop’s great selection of fresh produce, coupled with our handy tips and meal inspiration, will help you on your journey.

Ginger from Bundaberg, Gympie and the Sunshine Coast is our pick of the week. It’s in excellent supply and great quality, so now’s a perfect time to add fresh Ginger to your shopping basket. Its many health benefits include reduced nausea, improved digestion and inflammation relief. Make a healthy start to your day with our Lemon Ginger Overnight Oats with Turmeric.

Turmeric from the Sunshine Coast is also in good supply this week. Commonly used in Asian cuisine for thousands of years, much of the world has only recently discovered the positive impact of Turmeric – now classified as a superfood. It has a track record of improving heart health, relieving osteoarthritis pain and treating burns on the skin.

Supply of Toowoomba-grown Cauliflower is steadily improving, and you’re likely to find a better selection at your local fruit and veg shop than what we’ve seen in recent months. Making Cauliflower a regular part of your diet can help improve your cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of certain cancers. If you’re after a decadent meat-free meal, give our recipe for Roasted Cauliflower a go!

Broccoli from Gatton is also beginning to improve in supply after a challenging period due to recent weather events. A versatile and tasty vegetable, Broccoli is rich in nutrients and vitamins.

Mini Capsicums from the Whitsunday region town of Gumlu are widely available this week. Typically 5cm in length, they’re slightly sweeter than a full-size Capsicum and are the perfect snack on your next grazing platter. Red, Green and Yellow Capsicums from Bundaberg will also be in abundance at your local fruit and veg shop this week. Apart from adding aesthetic appeal to your dishes, they’re filled with beta-carotene, an antioxidant that helps maintain eye health.

Passionfruit from Mareeba is in good supply this week. An excellent source of dietary fibre and vitamin C, Passionfruit is a perfect lunchbox treat. If you want your Passionfruit to last longer, store it in an airtight plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Apples from Victoria and New South Wales are always a great pick. The Pink Lady, Royal Gala and Granny Smith varieties are in excellent supply, so you’ll be spoiled for choice at your local independent retailer this week. Enjoy comfort food at its best with our winter favourite recipe for Baked Apples.

Navel Oranges from Queensland’s Citrus hotspots – Mundubbera and Gayndah – are still in great supply. An average-size Orange has the same amount of fibre as seven cups of cornflakes, so making it a staple in your household is a smart choice. Need some Orange inspiration? Our Sweet Potato Orange Soup is a winner.

Enjoy a wide variety of seasonal produce from your local fruit and veg shop. Sourced from the Brisbane Markets© at Rocklea, much of what they have on offer can come straight from local Aussie farms and be available to you in as short as one day. That’s why shopping at your local independent retailer is A better choice! for freshness and great quality produce.
