Brisbane Produce Report – 10 June

  June 9, 2022  adonaldson

Shopping for seasonal produce ensures that the fruit and vegetables you’re eating are fresh. Produce starts to lose nutrients once it’s harvested, so getting your fresh produce from your local fruit and veg shop, having sourced their produce through the Brisbane Markets from thousands of growers across Australia, is a great way to ensure you are purchasing the best quality and range available.

Our pick of the week is Cauliflower from Toowoomba. After a period of supply challenges, Cauliflower is back to healthy supply levels, so now’s a great time to enjoy this superfood. If you’re trying to cut down on carbohydrates, Cauliflower is a tasty and nutritious alternative. Learn more about the health benefits of Cauliflower on the A better choice! website.

Red Capsicums from Townsville are in great supply right now. Capsicums can add a pop of colour and flavour to a breakfast, lunch or dinner dish. They also offer great versatility as they can be stir-fried, stuffed, roasted, barbecued or eaten raw. If you fancy a bit of home baking, give our savoury Mushroom and Red Capsicum Muffins a go!

Okra from Darwin is in season from now until late August. Also known as Lady’s Fingers, Okra originated in Africa. It has great health benefits, with 100g of Okra contributing to nearly 40% of your daily vitamin C intake. If you haven’t tried this exotic vegetable yet, now’s your chance.

With Queensland-grown leafy greens facing continued supply issues, it’s a good opportunity to give the lesser-known vegies some love. Kohlrabi from Victoria is available throughout the year, but June to August is peak season. A descendant of Wild Cabbage, it is commonly used raw in salads, steamed, boiled or roasted.

Moving from shortages to surpluses, Bananas from Tully are in very high supply. You’re likely to find a great deal on Bananas at your local fruit and veg shop this week. They’re best kept at room temperature and typically last up to one week. They’re also a great source of potassium and vitamin B6.

The North Burnett region towns of Gayndah and Mundubbera continue to supply citrus fruit in abundance. This week’s highlights include LemonsMandarinsNavel Oranges and Grapefruit. For a Chinese-inspired meal that lets citrus steal the show, try our Mandarin Orange Chicken.

Apples from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria are in great supply. You’re likely to find all varieties of Apples in-store this week, so why not try one you haven’t tasted before? Keep an eye out for some of the delicious new varieties coming in from Stanthorpe.

Custard Apples out of the Sunshine Coast are near the end of their season, so this week’s a good time to get your hands on some. Their delicious creamy texture and sweet flavour make this fruit a must try. They also have a low glycaemic index (GI), keeping you fuller for longer. If you’re after a winning recipe, our Custard Apple Teacake takes the cake!

If your favourite produce line is not available or has increased in price due to seasonality or weather, there are plenty of substitutes to fit your budget. Have a chat to your local fruit and veg shop about what alternatives they’d recommend. They are knowledgeable and passionate about helping families in their community make good decisions when it comes to fresh produce. That’s why shopping at your local fruit and veg shop is A better choice!
