Brisbane Produce Report – 29 April

With the school holidays wrapped up and the change in season, you’ll see new seasonal produce on the shelves of your local fruit and veg shop.

Our pick of the week is Bundaberg-grown Sweet Potato. As temperatures drop and we move into cold and flu season, vegetables like Sweet Potato help strengthen your immune system and vital organs. Like in-season Pumpkins from the Lockyer Valley or Potatoes out of South Australia, Sweet Potatoes are versatile and flavour-filled ingredients in desserts or mains, just like these delicious Loaded Sweet Potato Bites.

If you’re still clinging onto summer, Pineapples from the Glasshouse Mountains on the Sunshine Coast may be just what you need. Aside from being packed with vitamins and minerals, this sweet tropical fruit can be eaten fresh, blended in juices and smoothies, or used to give your ham roast the ultimate glow up.

Honeydew from the Whitsundays town of Bowen are in good supply this week. This sweet and refreshing fruit is an excellent source of vitamin C and potassium. When selecting Honeydew, choose a melon that is heavy for its size and has a smooth, undamaged rind.

Citrus fruit are still in season, so expect to find top quality Imperial MandarinsNavel OrangesLemons and Limes from the Central Burnett towns of Gayndah and Mundubbera, on your local fruit and veg shop shelves. They’re low in calories, a great source of fibre, and contain nutrients that help maintain a healthy heart.

There is also an excellent variety of Grapes and Pears out of Victoria available at your local fruit and veg shop, with a variety for everyone! Pick some up this week for the perfect snack to keep you going throughout the day!

Green Beans from Stanthorpe are a rich source of vitamins A, C and K – helping maintain bone strength and promote fertility. They’re a perfect addition to a Sunday roast or are a great ingredient in vegetarian and vegan dishes.

You’ll find a well-stocked selection of South Australian-grown Onions and Potatoes on the shelves of your local fruit and veg shop this week. See the variety of ways to cook roasted vegetables for your loved ones using these multipurpose vegetables.

Some new season Brussels Sprouts out of Gympie and South Australia are available this week. Cook up a tasty bake of Maple and Mustard Brussels Sprouts for a side dish that the whole family will love!
