Brisbane Produce Report – 29 June

  June 29, 2023  adonaldson

As wet weather is forecast to hit most of Queensland next week, there’s nothing better on a rainy day than to cook up a delicious comfort meal with bountiful winter produce. Head into your local fruit and veg shop today to stock up on fresh produce sourced from the Brisbane Markets for all your favourite cold-weather meals.

Our pick of the week is Navel Oranges, with supplies coming from Mundubbera in Queensland, as well as from New South Wales and South Australia. Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C, folic acid and dietary fibre, adding health and flavour to all kinds of dishes, baked goods, or just as a healthy snack. For a fruity, warm, winter treat, bake these Strawberry and Orange Wholemeal Muffins.

Speaking of Strawberries, the winter season has started with fresh punnets coming in from the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture and the New South Wales Mid-North Coast. Treat yourself with an old classic: Chocolate Dipped Strawberries.

Both Ruby and Marsh Grapefruits are experiencing a drop in prices as there is plenty of produce coming from New South Wales and Victoria. Sweet and tangy in flavour, Grapefruits are full of nutritional value and vitamins A and C. Add some zest with this Salad of Seared Tuna with Seedless Watermelon, Grapefruit and Avocado.

North Queensland is producing a steady supply of Papaya this week. Technically a large berry, this tropical fruit is a great source of potassium, dietary fibre, vitamin B1 and more. Why not pick some up this week and make this Papaya Relish to enjoy on toasted bread on cold winter mornings.

Another exotic fruit you’ll see in your local fruit and veg shop this week is Cumquats from Mundubbera. This citrus fruit has a sweet, yet tangy flavour and can be eaten fresh with the peel on or added to salads.

Super creamy and perfect for every occasion, Avocados from North Queensland are great quality this week. Smash up some for your toast, add it to your taco-night helpings, or get creative with breakfast and try out these Baked Eggs in Avocado as a warming way to start a cold day.

There is an abundance of Eggplant coming from Bowen and Gatton this week, bringing the price down on this member of the Nightshade family. For a vegetarian take on take out, try these Grilled Eggplant Burgers.

South Australian Brussels Sprouts are in harvest season, making their way through the Brisbane Markets to your local fruit and veg shop. Take advantage of the good supply and pricing with this richly flavoured Brussels Sprouts and Blue Cheese Pizza recipe.

Victorian grown Fennel is also in season, and perfect for adding flavour to roasts, sauces and salads, it compliments meat dishes really well. Just try these Pork and Fennel Sausage Rolls.

The Lockyer Valley are in the middle of their winter harvest period, so you will continue to see things like CauliflowerBroccoli, Lettuce and Cabbage from this region well priced and easy to find in your local fruit and veg shop. Make them a staple in your dinners with recipes like this cheesy Broccoli and Cauliflower Bake.

Root vegetables should definitely be on your shopping list this week, with Potatoes from Thorndale, NSW, and Sweet Potatoes from Bundaberg in plentiful supply and at great prices. With Lockyer Valley Cauliflower still well priced, it’s the perfect time for taco night with these delicious veg-forward Roasted Sweet Potato and Cauliflower Tacos.
