Brisbane Produce Report – 9 February

  February 9, 2023  adonaldson

As February rolls in, we are seeing plenty of great produce available at your local fruit and veg shop, just in time to treat your loved ones with something special. This Valentine’s Day, be sure to pop in, pick up the best quality produce for a romantic dinner, and don’t forget to pick up a bunch of fresh, seasonal flowers while you’re there, too!

Our pick of the week is Corn. Deliciously sweet and juicy, Aussie Corn from the Lockyer Valley is the ultimate summer treat for the end of a hot day. Packed with vitamins C and A, dietary fibre, and Iron, fuel your body with Corn this week. Whether a classic Corn on the Cob is your style, or delicious Corn Cakes with Yellow Capsicum Relish, you won’t be disappointed.

Capsicum from Gatton and Stanthorpe is still in steady supply. Sweet, crispy and healthy, Capsicums are versatile, come in a variety of colours, and can be found in many cuisines. There are many recipes that use Capsicum including this delicious Roasted Capsicum Bruschetta with Halloumi, served as a main meal or a tasty treat.

Broccoli from Gatton is a powerhouse of nutritional benefits and is packed with flavour! Gone are the days of over-cooked veg, make your Broccoli shine and reap the benefits of this wonderful veg! Try this Roast Broccoli Salad with Spicy Tahini Dressing for a flavour-packed starter or side dish!

Tomatoes are an everyday staple, and there’s no question why: they’re full of flavour, versatile and there are lots of varieties to choose from! Take your pick from Gourmet, Truss, Cherry and Heirloom tomatoes from Bundaberg, Gatton and South Australia. Try your hand at a Cherry Tomato Salad, simple yet delicious for a mid-week meal option.

Okra from Gatton and Lowood is in abundance and is loving the hot weather. Also known as “lady’s fingers”, Okra originated from Africa. Do your body a favour and start the week, meat free with a super tasty Okra and Potato Curry.

Cauliflower and Cabbage are in good supply and making their way into store from the Lockyer Valley. Both are nutrient dense and can be used in a variety of ways and in different cuisines. For a Middle Eastern option, Cauliflower, Zucchini and Halloumi Fritters, or Italian Air Fried Cauliflower Arancini balls or for something simple, Roast Cauliflower Salad.

Look out for new season seedless Watermelon from Chinchilla (don’t forget about the upcoming Chinchilla Melon Festival!) and Rockmelon from Lakelands, Burdekin, Bundaberg, Lockyer Valley and New South Wales for a thirst quenching after school snack. Melons have a high-water content so are very hydrating on a hot summer’s day and an excellent source of potassium, vitamin B and C. Just scoop out the flesh with a spoon and enjoy the taste of summer! Try this hydrating Watermelon, Rockmelon and Goat’s Cheese Salad.

Dragon Fruit is not only beautiful to look at but has an exotic mildly sweet flavour often described as a blend of pear and kiwi. Arriving at the market from the Lockyer Valley and Bundaberg, Dragon Fruit is high in antioxidants, vitamin C with minerals, especially calcium for bone strength and phosphorus for the growth and maintenance, and repair of all tissue cells amongst other benefits to the body.

From Cairns to the Tablelands, North Queensland Bananas are the ultimate, convenient, portable snack and ready to be added to your weekly shop. Making Bananas a part of your diet will add instant energy to your day, elevate your mood and relieve stomach and intestinal ills, plus they smash any hunger. Kick start you morning with Banana Raisin Pancakes.

Pick up some Passionfruit from Bundaberg and add some tropical flavours to your dishes! Try a smooth, creamy Passionfruit Mousse for a sweet treat this week. Passionfruit is also a wonderful addition to your favourite drinks for a boost of flavour.

There is still a lot of zesty, fresh Ginger on offer from the Sunshine Coast and North Queensland harvests. Ginger adds a fragrant boost of flavour many dishes. Make your Valentine smile with Grilled Pacific Prawns with Lime Ginger Marinade followed by an Aussie Mandarin Ginger Tart.
