  December 14, 2022  adonaldson

Your local fruit and veg shop is full of delicious seasonal fruit and veg this week with stand-out summer produce to grace your festive tables and feed the family. This time of year, is very busy for your local fruit and veg shop, and it’s an important time to be thankful for all the hard work that goes into providing the best quality fruit and veg to you and your community.

Our pick of the week is Plums from Stanthorpe, the shining light of the stonefruit family this week! Full of flavour and sweetness, this versatile fruit can be enjoyed in sweets like this Plum and Chocolate Self Saucing Pudding or savoury recipes such as Grilled Pork Chops with Tangy Plum Sauce. Pick up a bag at your local fruit and veg shop today.

As growing regions overlap and the season continues, Mangoes are in excellent supply and are of great quality from Bowen to Mareeba and everywhere in between. There’s nothing that quite compares to a cold Mango on a hot summer day, eaten fresh or frozen and blended into a smoothie or ice cream. With Mangoes in such great supply, it’s a great time to stock up for all your sweet and savoury Mango needs. For a simple and refreshing snack this weekend, try these Mango and Mint Rice Paper Rolls!

Cherries from Victoria are the perfect addition to your holiday plans and are a delicious treat. Add Cherries to your favourite salads, or summer punch drinks or simply top off your favourite morning cereals with Cherries for a seasonal twist! For a very Cherry Christmas roast, try the Roast Pork and Cherry Stuffing!

Sweet and ripe Rockmelons and Honeydews are ready to eat and in steady supply. North Queensland and Bundaberg melons are making their way to your local, independent fruit and veg shop and are a summer seasonal, refreshing snack option.

Bananas from North Queensland are exceptional eating and in good supply. Bananas are a natural remedy for many ills and compared to an apple, they have twice the carbohydrates, four times the protein, five times the vitamin A and iron, three times the phosphorus, and twice the number of other vitamins and minerals. All this goodness makes Bananas, an ideal addition to your shopping trolley this week.

Lychees from Mareeba, are in good supply and are a delicious summer snack`, perfectly juicy and sweet with a boost of vitamin C and potassium! The Lychee is ripe when the inedible outer skin turns from green to red or pink-red in colour. Want to save your Lychees for future use? Once peeled, Lychees can be frozen to use later!

Cucumbers are in excellent supply and quality, grown locally and from Lowood and Glasshouse Mountains. This refreshing veg (that’s technically a fruit, we know!) are a refreshing addition to simple salads such as a crunchy Greek Salad or Middle-Eastern Fattoush. If you’re entertaining this week, you can’t go past a fresh home-made Tzatziki!

Button and Flat Mushrooms, from Yatala are good eating and we will continue to see them through the peak Christmas period. Known as the vegetarian’s meat, Mushrooms are packed with vitamins, minerals, protein and antioxidants. Baked Breakfast Mushrooms Stuffed with Feta, Spinach and Egg is an indulgent, yet healthy breakfast option.
