Brisbane Produce Report – 2 December

  December 1, 2022  adonaldson

Summer is finally here, and with the change in season comes a bounty of new-season fresh produce available at your local fruit and veg shop. Summer is the time to celebrate friends, family and the end of another year, and it’s always made much brighter by deliciously fresh salads, lunchtime spreads and family barbeques. Pick up some beautiful fresh, seasonal produce this week and into the festive season from your local fruit and veg shop to help you and your family celebrate this summer.

Our pick of the week is Wombok, which is currently in good supply from Stanthorpe. Also known as Chinese Cabbage, Wombok is perfect for use in a coleslaw or shredded on a sandwich, hamburger or in dumplings. It is also high in vitamins A and C.

Other Asian greens that are in good supply and are the perfect addition to your summer stir-fries or salads are Bok Choy, Gai Lan and Choy Sum from Gatton and Belmont. Add aromatics and your favourite Asian-style sauces to create a tasty stir-fry like this Calamari with Buk Choy recipe this week.

Cucumbers are still in great supply from the greater Brisbane area and Bundaberg and can add a refreshing crunch to salads or sandwiches. They are also the perfect snack to accompany dips or simply eaten alone! Add some Cucumber to your shopping basket this week. Try our Quinoa, Cucumber and Feta Salad for a salad that fills you up and is loaded with flavour!

Tomatoes are a summer-time staple and are great quality this week, coming from Bundaberg and South Australia. Whether used for salads, sandwiches or a classic pasta sauce, Tomatoes are a great option from your local fruit and veg shop throughout summer. Look for fruit that has vibrant colour and is not too soft.

Zucchini is still of excellent quality this week from Stanthorpe and Gatton. Tasty and versatile, Zucchini can be added to a variety of dishes for an added hint of green. You can’t go wrong with our Zucchini Lasagne, where Zucchini is the star of the show for an easy mid-week dinner.

Dutch Carrots are a beautiful vegetable grown in Gatton, New South Wales and Victoria, adding a delicious sweetness to your meals.  A perfect accompaniment for your Sunday roast, why not try Braised Dutch Carrots or tossed through a refreshing summer salad. They’re a winner this week.

Avocados are in great supply from North Queensland and North Tambourine, and will only continue to improve into the warmer months. Avocados are loaded with nutrients and are a healthy option to add to breakfasts like toast or smoothies or can be added to your favourite salads for a creamy textural addition. Try our Strawberry, Avocado and Basil Salad this week!

Rockmelons are in good supply and great eating due to the warmer weather ripening the fruit from Bundaberg and Gatton. These sweet, sub-tropical treats are great for juicing, smoothies, and snacks to help you beat the increasing heat and humidity.

Berries are plentiful, with a wide variety available from Stanthorpe including Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries and Raspberries. Add your favourite berries to salads for a pop of juicy sweetness or eat alone as a refreshing snack that fits into your lunchbox perfectly. For a sweet treat, try Blueberry and White Chocolate Cookies for a treat for the whole family.

Stanthorpe stone fruit is continually improving in quality and variety, with options including Peach, Nectarine, Apricots and new-season Plums gracing the shelves of your local fruit and veg shop. Look for fruit that is fragrant with a slight bit of give when pressing to select fruit that is ripe. Stone fruit ripens on your benchtop if you want to buy today and eat later in the week! Cherries are also improving in quality and are a wonderful option for your weekend lunch platters or week-day snacks.

North Queensland Pineapples are in abundance and are great quality eating. Pineapples are a good source of vitamin C and a useful source of Potassium, and are great in a summer pick me up like this Cucumber, Mint and Pineapple Smoothie.
