Brisbane Produce Report – 24 November

  November 24, 2022  adonaldson

As we enter the final week of Spring, we are excited to see the shift into warmer weather and all that comes with it. Your local fruit and veg shop will continue to see a change in rotation from spring produce to summer produce, with a bounty of stone fruit, Grapes, tropical fruits and your favourite staples. Rain in parts of the country is affecting some produce lines, but with more consistent weather, we will see better quality produce and an ease in prices.

Watermelons are our pick of the week. Synonymous with summer, this juicy, sweet fruit is good to enjoy on its own as a hydrating afternoon tea option or in a tasty salad. North Queensland Watermelons are now in good supply and great eating. Why not try this refreshing Watermelon, Cucumber and Feta salad and liven up your next Aussie barbeque.

Juicy and sweet Mangoes are in excellent supply from North Queensland and are in your local fruit and veg shop now. Mangoes are best enjoyed fresh as a refreshing snack, or sliced and added to a salad like our Chicken Mango & Avocado Salad. No matter how you enjoy them, the whole family will appreciate having some fresh Mangoes this week.

More stone fruit varieties are appearing in your local fruit and veg shops this week. Plums from Stanthorpe are excellent quality eating with their sweet, sticky, chewy texture. Enjoy as an accompaniment to a pork main meal or in a smoothie, sorbet or dessert like this Chocolate and Plum Brownie.

Apricots are still a delicious option this week. This small, orange stonefruit, is an enjoyable addition to savoury meals such as stews or curries or can be added to smoothies and tropical fruit salads. Try our Apricot Smoothie for a refreshing pick-me-up this week.

Lychees are increasing in supply and of good quality this week with the warmer weather helping to ripen the fruit. This little oval or round shaped fruit is sweet yet tangy and works in salads, desserts or simply peel off the skin and enjoy eating as a snack. Lychees are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fibre.

Aussie Grape season has begun, with a selection of Red and White Grapes from Emerald appearing in your local fruit and veg shop. Grapes make the perfect snack on a hot day and are a healthy, sweet treat for the school lunchbox. Enjoy this Grape Pate Crispbread today.

Carrots from Boonah will remain at a good price all summer and are in good supply. Carrots add sweetness to your dishes, whether roasted, added to your Mum’s carrot cake recipe, or eaten fresh with your favourite dip! We can’t get enough of them in this Honey Sesame Carrots recipe that highlights their sweetness.

Crunchy, Green Beans from Gatton are still in good supply this week and can be snapped up at your fruit and veg shop for a good price. Steam or blanche and serve with a garlic butter sauce. Or go for something more exotic like this Green Bean, Feta and Walnut Salad.

Mushrooms from Stanthorpe and Woodford are a great option at the moment. Mushrooms are rich in vitamins and minerals and add so much flavour to your meals. Mushrooms complement meat dishes, or are a great substitute for meat in burgers, tacos, or stews. You can’t go wrong with this Cheesy Mushroom Pie for a recipe the whole family will love.

Iceberg Lettuce from Toowoomba are in good supply and quality this week. This versatile vegetable is a popular summer salad choice. Look for a round, firm head when choosing a Lettuce.

The Radish is a small, low growing root vegetable and is in steady supply from Brisbane this week. Select a Radish with healthy leaves with a well-shaped and well coloured bulb. An excellent source of vitamin C can be served whole or sliced, pickled or marinated. Radishes are an excellent source of vitamin C.
