Brisbane Produce Report – 4 March

  March 3, 2022  lleeson

Fresh fruit and veg is already making its way back onto the shelves at local fruit and veg shops throughout Queensland after major flooding and subsequent road closures impacted growers, wholesalers, and fruiterers this week. There will be some shortages resulting in some unseasonal price rises for some produce lines over the coming weeks. However, with the resilience of the fresh produce distribution chain in Queensland, your local fruit and veg shop will now be able to secure a wide variety of produce from the Brisbane Produce Market – so get in and support your local fruit and veg shop!

This week’s pick of the week is new season gala Apples! Fresh out of the orchard, Gala Apples are in season. This classic red apple is a delicious offering, with a floral aroma and a mild, sweet flavour. This variety is crunchy, with a thin skin. Other than eating fresh and as is, we love using gala apples in salads, served with cheese, or in an apple slaw! They are also excellent for juicing and taste delicious when made into a sweet sauce. Try out our Raw Apple Pie Bars for a healthy mid-week snack! Be sure to pick some up this week at your local fruit and veg shop!

Other quality fruits that you will find this week are Figs, new season Pears, a wide variety of Grapes and some delicious Dragonfruit.

The great shift from Hass to Shepard Avocados is in swing! Both are currently available and of great quality. A tip to remember: Shepard avocados don’t go brown when ripe in the same way Hass avocados do, but they do feel softer as they ripen, so remember this when selecting your avocados this week!

Peaches, Plums and Nectarines are tasting better than ever, with peaches and nectarines best eaten while firm. You will soon find a wide variety of different plums back in your local fruit and veg shop, so now is a great time to try out something new and different! Who knows, you might even find a new favourite!

Autumn veggies have a special place in our heart. With a wide variety of uses, Autumn veg means warm cosy meals, like soups, stews, roasts, the list goes on! Make the most of it with beautiful Beetroot, Pumpkin and Kumara, an orange variety of sweet potato.

You will also find delicious Carrots, Corn and Eggplant are in season. We’re always loving using veggies in sweets, so why not make some delicious Carrot Muffins this week (we promise the kids will love them). For an easy, but absolutely delicious option for a mid-week dinner, try out these Stuffed Eggplants!

If ever in doubt, ask your local fruit and veg shop about the produce on offer in-store. With a wealth of knowledge and superior service, your local fruit and veg shop is the best place to shop for produce that is in season, and great quality!
