Brisbane Produce Report – 13 April

  April 13, 2023  adonaldson

With school holidays about to end, it’s time to start planning the fruit and vegetables going into your children’s lunchboxes! Make a visit to your local fruit and veg shop and explore all the wonderful varieties of seasonal Autumn produce, sourced from the Brisbane Markets, to get their creativity flowing! By incorporating colourful fruits and vegetables into daily meals, kids can boost their nutrition and have a memorable experience with food.

Our pick of the week are Capsicums from Bundaberg, which are characterised by their vibrant colours and glossy skin. Capsicums are rich in vitamins A and C, and can also help relieve stomach aches, muscle spasms, arthritis and prevent skin ageing. They are highly versatile and can find a place in almost any dish you can think of. If you need some inspiration, try pairing with Potatoes to make a Roast Chicken and Potatoes with Red Capsicum Relish.

As the weather starts to cool, it means it’s almost soup weather! One staple soup vegetable that is plentiful this week from Western Australia and South Australia is Carrot. Full of vitamins and fibre, Carrot is a great option at your local fruit and veg shop this week. This Spiced Carrot Soup with Ginger Raita is one we have regularly on the menu and it’s easy to see why!

The recent drop in temperature in the Lockyer Valley has given leafy green veg a flavour boost too. Superfood Kale and leafy Asian greens like Bok Choy develop a sweeter taste and more tender leaves in the colder months, making them an excellent addition to your trolley. Add this Green Kale and Lentil Curry to your Autumn meal rotation for a delicious and healthy meal!

Don’t forget to take Broccoli and Cauliflower from the Lockyer Valley home with you this week as well. The Lockyer Valley is one of Queensland’s prime growing regions for seasonal produce and offers some of the most fertile soil on the planet, making these vitamin packed vegetables even tastier! Combine the two for a nutrient rich and super delicious Broccoli and Cauliflower Bake.

Sweet Potato from Bundaberg is in abundance at the Brisbane Markets, so keep an eye out at your local fruit and veg shop. As well as giving you a boost in vitamins A and C, Sweet Potatoes are a good source of manganese, which helps promote skin and bone health, and have a much lower starch content than regular Potatoes. Try for a lower carb brekkie option this weekend with our Sweet Potato ‘Toast’.

Are you a Chestnut fan? Pick up some delicious Victorian Chestnuts from your local fruit and veg shop and make the most of these delicious nuts! Chestnuts soften when heat is applied and add a deliciously creamy and nutty flavour to your favourite dishes. Try this Roast Pumpkin, Chestnut, Lentil and Feta Salad this week for something new!

For a unique Autumnal variety to try with the kids this week, try picking up new season Quince from South Australia. Related to the Apple and Pear, Quince embraces the warming flavours of Autumn with notes of vanilla, making it a delicious baked treat! Try these Oven Poached Quinces and serve with ice cream for a dessert the entire family will adore.

North Queensland Lemon season is well underway, with plenty available at the Brisbane Markets. Lemons are a great option to keep your body and immune system in check as the weather continues to cool, with a healthy dose of Vitamin C to improve immune health and aid digestion. Try these Lemon Bars for a fun way to use Lemons that the kids will love to find in their lunchbox!

If you’re looking for a sweet treat this week, look no further than the delicious Plums in abundance from Shepparton and Young. Plums are not only a delicious snack, but also provide beneficial nutrients for a nourishing diet, helping to maintain the health of the digestive system and boost bone health.

All varieties of Grapes from Victoria are still readily available at your local fruit and veg shop this week. With their sweet flavour making them both a delicious and healthy snack, Grapes are always bound to be a crowd pleaser! Pick up some Grapes for easy school snacks, or get the kids involved by making a Red Grape and Plum Smoothie.
