Brisbane Produce Report – 9 September

  September 9, 2022  adonaldson

Find a bounty of seasonal produce at your local fruit and veg retailer this week! With the weather warming up, expect to see a wide variety of new season produce on offer.

Our pick of the week is Zucchini from Bundaberg which is in abundance right now at your local fruit and veg retailer. Zucchini has more potassium than a banana and has no cholesterol or unhealthy fats. It is full of antioxidants such as lutein, carotenes, and zeaxanthin, which help slow down ageing. Why not put some zing into your spring this weekend with these Chocolate and Zucchini Donuts.

Asparagus is a spring-time staple and with the new season comes a new crop of this delicious and delicate Victorian-grown vegetable! There are several ways to enjoy Asparagus, as a side-dish to accompany meats or fish or added into a quiche. For a dish the whole family will enjoy try these Baked Asparagus Spears.

Avocados from Central Queensland and Blackbutt are in great supply with both Hass and Reed varieties available. While everyone knows the Hass avocado, Reed Avocado is a lesser-known variety that is large and round with a creamy and nutty flavour. The skin on Reed Avocados stays green when ripe. Select avocados by gently pressing around the top of the fruit and feel for a slight softness.

There is also an excellent supply of Eggplant from Bowen this week. Eggplant is originally native to India but have since found their way into multiple cuisines. While Eggplant is really a fruit, it is more often eaten as a vegetable. It is known to be good for your bones, improves memory, lowers blood pressure, and aid’s digestion. Try this Oven Roasted Eggplant Pomegranate and Pecan Dip at your next dinner party.

Mundubbera-grown Murcott Mandarins are still in good supply and are a deliciously sweet treat, perfect for the lunchbox. Mandarins contain plenty of Vitamin C to support a healthy immune system. Make something a little out of the ordinary with Mandarins this week and whip up a savoury Mandarin Orange Chicken for the family.

Still in season are Lemons from Munduberra and Mareeba. Known for their anti-bacterial properties, lemons are a high source of vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants. For a sweet treat try these Lemon Curd Scones.

Limes from Mareeba are also in great supply at your local fruit and veg retailer this week. So too, are spectacular tasting berries such as delicious Strawberries from the Sunshine Coast and Blueberries from Caboolture and Coffs Harbour. Make the most of seasonal berries and citrus with our Blood Orange and Strawberry Galette.
