Brisbane Produce Report – 26 August

  August 25, 2022  adonaldson

How will you be celebrating the end of Winter? With plenty of new varieties of fresh produce at your local Fruit and Veg retailer, it’s soon time to get cooking with your favourite Spring veggies and fruits!

Our pick of the week is Brisbane-grown Coriander which is in great supply this week. Coriander has been cultivated around the world as a medicinal and culinary herb for at least 3000 years. Its leaves are great added fresh to curries and Thai dishes, stews, salads, sauces and used as a garnish. Coriander is also a good source of vitamin C. For something different try this Chilled Avocado and Coriander Soup.

A mix between Broccoli and Chinese Kale and a delicately flavoured member of the Brassica family, Baby Broccoli from Victoria is in good supply this week. Baby Broccoli lends itself well to cooking over a grill to intensify the flavour, or it can be steamed or added to stir-fry for a nutrient-packed addition to your favourite meals.

Snow Peas from Bundaberg are still in season. Loaded with vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, potassium, dietary fibre, magnesium, folic acid, and small levels of healthy fats, Snow Peas are a great springtime addition to your dinner plate!

Leafy Greens out of Gatton and the Lockyer Valley are getting back into full swing, with a wide variety of Lettuce available, including Red and Green Oak, Cos, and Iceberg Lettuce for all your salad and sandwich lunches!

Lockyer Valley-grown Cauliflower is a veggie that is still of great value this week and has so many uses! Just one Cauliflower head could make several meals. Try this Roast Cauliflower Salad for an easy and delicious weeknight dish!

Lemons from Gayndah, Mundubbera, South Australia, and Victoria are of good quality this week and are an essential ingredient to pick up! In the mood to cook up something sweet with Lemons this week? Make our favourite Lemon Curd for a delicious topping on scones or your morning toast or porridge!

Queensland-grown Murcott Mandarins from Gayndah and Mundubbera are in good supply this week. They are a great source of vitamins A, B, and C to keep your immune system functioning properly and to help you get over the last of those winter bugs! Why not pick up some Mandarins, Coriander and Ginger from your local fruit and veg retailer and try these Aussie Mandarin Chicken Rice Paper Rolls to help put Spring into your step!

Berries are still in season and well-loved this time of year! Strawberries from the Sunshine Coast, Elimbah and Wamuran are bright red and sweet, making for a tasty snack. There are heaps of Raspberries coming out of Victoria, and Blueberries from Coffs Harbour and Victoria are also starting to come back in price. Whip together our Blueberry and Yoghurt Bread for afternoon tea this weekend.

The supply of Apples from Stanthorpe is starting to reduce a little. However, Apples from South Australia and Victoria are in plentiful supply this week at your local Fruit and Veg shop. Perfectly sweet and crisp, Apples are a wonderful way to get your daily fruit intake! Keep your Apples fresh at home by keeping them cool to maintain their crunch!
