Brisbane Produce Report – 27 May

  May 26, 2022  adonaldson

La Niña, the atmospheric phenomenon responsible for recent weather patterns, has shown little sign of reprieve. Whilst rain has been on the menu most days, it’s positive to see supply improvements in some produce lines that you’ll find at your local fruit and veg shop.

Our pick of the week is Passionfruit from Bundaberg. Widely available year-round, you’ll find Passionfruit in good supply at your local independent retailer. It’s a great source of dietary fibre and has an aromatic and sweet flavour that is hard to resist. Passionfruit pulp is used in some of our favourite sweet dishes, like this Passionfruit Slice!

Premium quality Pineapples from Yeppoon are in good supply right now. While you’re most likely to find a size 10 Pineapple, weighing approximately 1kg, in store this week, some Queensland growers have been harvesting size 4 Pineapples, weighing up to 2.5kg. That makes the three-year wait to grow a Pineapple well worth it!

Avocado season is in full swing, with most varieties on the shelves of your independent retailer. Extra-large Sharwil Avocados from the Glasshouse Mountains are arguably considered to be one of the world’s best varieties of this superfood. Richest in fibre, folate and magnesium amongst all fruit, Avocados help lower cholesterol and improve digestion.

Royal Honey Murcott Mandarins from Munduberra can also be added to the list of supersized fruit to pick up from your local fruit and veg shop this week. Created and cultivated in the Central Burnett region of Queensland, Royal Honey Murcotts are the sweetest of all Mandarin varieties and are the perfect ingredient in Mandarin Marmalade.

Bundaberg-grown Chillies may be just what you need to fight the cold nights. Whilst Birds Eye Chillies and Cayenne Peppers are more limited, Jalapenos and Green Chillies are in great supply this week.

Leafy greens out of Gatton are still suffering the effects of heavy rain, with locally grown Celery in short supply. As a result, you’re more likely to find Victoria-grown Celery at your local fruit and veg shop this week. A leafy green that is in good supply this week is Chinese Cabbage from Ipswich. Referred to as Wong Nga Baak in Chinese, it has a sweeter flavour than Cabbage and is commonly shredded in dumplings and rolls.

Look out for Purple Carrots from Western Australia this week. Aesthetically unique and more nutritious than the typical variety of Carrots, they date back to the Persian Empire in the 10th century. Other vegies in good supply are Potatoes from South Australia, Parsnips from Victoria, and Bundaberg-grown Capsicums – in all their colourful glory!

Head to your local fruit and veg shop for consistently high-quality fresh produce. It’s a better choice for you and your family!
