Brisbane Produce Report – 13 May

  May 12, 2022  adonaldson

As the days get cooler, it’s important to protect your immunity. If you’re craving comfort food on chilly nights, you can still find ways to make it nutritious. Your local fruit and veg shop has a great selection of fresh and high-quality produce.

Our pick of the week is Broccoli from Gatton. This vitamin-rich superfood is in good supply this week. When choosing Broccoli, look for firm stalks with a bright green head and compact clusters of florets and fresh leaves. It has the shortest life of any vegetable, so it’s best to keep it refrigerated below 4°C. For a delicious weeknight meal, try this Fish in Lemon Butter Sauce with Broccoli.

Other Gatton-grown veges in good supply this week include CabbageCauliflower and Lettuce. Leafy greens are packed with nutrients your body needs to build and maintain good immunity. These vegetables are great options when you’re sick or want to reduce your chances of getting sick. Ginger from the Sunshine Coast is also a great food to combat nausea and high blood pressure.

Choko out of Caboolture are coming back in season and are an excellent source of dietary fibre. Known as a vegetable Pear, Choko can be added to your favourite winter soups or casseroles. It also lasts longer when stored in an airtight plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Squash from Gympie is in good supply year-round. Low in sodium and a good source of vitamins A and C, Squash is a tasty ingredient in a breakfast, lunch, or dinner dish. Try this Simple Squash Frittata and experience it for yourself!

Whilst heavy rain has affected supply of some produce lines, citrus fruit are a notable exception. Now’s a great time to enjoy the wide variety of citrus fruits, predominantly grown in Gayndah, Queensland’s oldest town. The town’s top citrus picks this week include GrapefruitLemons and Daisy Mandarins, a large mandarin that’s known for its balance of sweetness and acidity.

Custard Apples from the Sunshine Coast are in peak season right now. If you haven’t tried one yet, now’s your best chance. Named for its similarity in taste to traditional custard, this exotic fruit was found on the island of Timor more than a thousand years ago. Fast forward to the twenty-first century, Australia is now the largest commercial producer of Custard Apples globally.

Queensland-grown Melons are in great supply this week. Seedless Watermelons from Ayr, Rockmelon from Bundaberg or Honeydew from Gumlu are great for sharing and entertaining.

Innisfail-grown Papaya is widely available throughout the year. Packed with vitamins, this fruit helps build immunity and aids in digestion. If you want to turn a Papaya into a culinary experience, try this Baked Papaya.

Pears from Victoria are plentiful, with a wide range of new-season varieties available including Beurre Bosc Brown Pears, Packham Pears, and Nashi Pears – all excellent quality. If you’re wanting a delicious baked treat, whip up this Pear and Chocolate Upside Down Cake for the family or your next dinner party.

Make your way down to your local fruit and veg shop this week for a better choice of quality, freshness and service!
