Brisbane Produce Report – 18 March

  March 17, 2022  adonaldson

Eating your daily servings of fruit and vegetables is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and with plenty of delicious options at your local fruit and veg shop, getting your daily helpings is easy!

Our pick of the week this week is the locally grown Persimmons from Stanthorpe and Mareeba. Persimmons are large, heart-shaped fruits that range in colour from pale orange to deep red orange. Persimmons are ready to eat when their flesh is soft, sweet and jelly-like. They can also be used to bake biscuits and breads. Queensland is the major producing state of persimmons. Pick some up if you see them at your local fruit and veg shop and try your hand at making our Persimmon and Herb Chicken Salad!

Be sure to pick up some Grapes from Robinvale at your local fruit and veg shop this week! There are so many varieties in season, particularly red and white seedless, sultanas, muscat and table grapes. There is still good supply of Victoria grown stone fruit, but they won’t stay around for too much longer! There are a good variety of Plums and Peaches out of Swan Hill available this week, so be sure to pick some up for a rich source of antioxidants and vitamins.

Locally grown Shepard Avocados are in season now and are ready to eat when they are soft and green, unlike Hass Avocados from Western Australia that are ripe when they turn purple. Avocados are rich in healthy fats and are a great fruit to boost the nutrition in your daily intake! Guava from Gympie is coming into season at the moment and is a perfect addition to this week’s shop. Guava is rich in vitamin C to improve immunity, and lycopene and antioxidants that are beneficial for the skin. The manganese found in guava also helps the body absorb key nutrients from the food that we eat, so be sure to pick some up this week! Other delicious fruits to find this week are Limes and Lemons from the Central Burnett region, delicious Figs from Stanthorpe, and don’t forget about Apples and Pears from Victoria and Stanthorpe that are making their way onto shelves now!

With plenty of delicious vegetables available, there’s no excuse not to pack your meals with fresh veg this week! Find excellent Victorian grown Broccoli and Cauliflower this week and for a locally grown veg try Zucchini from Southeast Queensland or Beans from Bundaberg. After something different for dinner? Try out our Pizza Cauliflower Bake that will have the whole family loving their veggies!

Another new fixture in your local fruit and veg shop this week is Chestnuts from Victoria. Chestnuts have a variety of uses, and can be eaten alone, in desserts and as an accompaniment to meat dishes. They can also be used as a meat replacement! To cook chestnuts, score the shell before roasting or grilling, or cut in half to boil! Another great find in the way of nuts is fresh Pistachios from Victoria with a delicate sweet flavour and soft texture. Other seasonal veggies in store this week include Victoria grown FennelCorn and locally grown Pumpkin out of Gatton, all perfect additions to your weekly shop!

Make the most of what’s in season this week and remember to ask your local fruit and veg shop about any new produce you are unfamiliar with, you might learn something new! Cooking with a wide variety of fruit and vegetables is a great way to boost the nutritional value of your meals and make eating fresh more exciting! Choose to shop at your local fruit and veg shop!
