Brisbane Produce Report – 11 February

  February 10, 2022  adonaldson

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, so there’s no better time to treat your loved ones to beautiful fresh produce and flowers from your local fruit and veg shop! There are still plenty of summer fruits available as well as a wide variety of fresh vegetables available, with shelves fully stocked and ready for your weekend shop.

Our Pick of the Week this week is Rockmelon coming out from Victoria, South Australia and Griffith! Super juicy and sweet, Rockmelon is a great snacking fruit that is great value and is a great fruit to share among the family. To make the most in-season Rockmelon you could use it in fruit salads or pair with custard for a sweet treat. We love using Rockmelon as a sophisticated starter in these Rockmelon and Prosciutto Skewers (perfect for a Valentine’s Day entree), or you could even whip up a delicious summer drink and make this Rockmelon Frose! Rockmelon is also packed with nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium.

Other fruits that are a great option this week are Figs from Gatton and Bundaberg, Plums from Victoria, Pears from Stanthorpe and Victoria. The new Apples season continues with Gala variety coming from Stanthorpe, Victoria and New South Wales. There is also plenty of fresh Aussie citrus available, including Oranges out of South Australia and Victoria and Limes from Mareeba and Bundaberg, great for fresh summer salads like our Salmon and Orange Rice Salad!

There are also plenty of great quality Grapes from Emerald and Victoria in stores now, perfect eaten alone as a snack, or in salads. Try out these Grape and Walnut Salad Cups for a fun little treat! Tasmanian grown Blueberries and Raspberries are coming towards the end of their season with limited stock available at the moment.

In veggies this week, pick up some beautiful Eggplant from South Australia, a versatile vegetable that you can grill, bake, fry and add to classic favourites, like these Eggplant and Chicken Tacos!

Fennel from Victoria is a great summer vegetable, and can be used in several ways. Slice it finely and add to salads for a nice kick of anise flavour or roast it and have as an accompaniment to meats or fish. You can even add it to pastries, like these Pork and Fennel Sausage Rolls and get the kids involved in some baking this weekend!

You will find great quality Beans from Gatton and Victoria, Baby Broccoli from Victoria and locally grown Kale and Bean Sprouts at your local fruit and veg shop this week, all great additions to your favourite meals and a good boost of nutrition.

Corn coming out of Gatton and Victoria is in good supply and is beautifully sweet and refreshing. Try using it in new ways this week, you could add it to fritters, muffins or try a new salad like our Mexican Corn Salad!

We also recommend trying out Yellow Capsicums from South Australia in this week’s shop! Yellow capsicum is slightly more fruity in taste and tastes great roasted, or you could even try making Yellow Capsicum Relish. You could also pair it with great quality Squash and make a Squash Vegetable Medley, a perfect side for mid-week meals.

Head to your local fruit and veg shop to see this week’s seasonal produce. The best way to shop and cook is to follow the seasons, and be sure to ask your local fruit and veg shop if you have any questions about what’s in season.
