Brisbane Market Report 106
While it might not feel like Autumn just yet, we’re seeing a few of our new season favourites arrive at the Brisbane Produce Market. William pears, Thompson seedless grapes and Stanthorpe-grown Red Delicious apples are featuring prominently on the shelves. Citrus fruits are starting to make an appearance, including Australian Valencia oranges, lemons, and Queensland-grown limes. We reckon that means it’s time to don the baking apron and whip up lemon curd for tarts (and toast!), or a zesty lime and coconut cake. Also looking good this week are locally grown pineapples, Fu..

Extreme weather conditions continue to loom large over the Brisbane Produce Market this week. Extensive rain in tropical North Queensland and hot temperatures across the country have affected supplies of bananas, berries, beans, celery, corn, lettuce, herbs, and zucchini. So what’s the good news? Melons are still excellent quality, while grapes and figs continue their bumper run. For apples, we have new season Red Delicious and Gala varieties as well as Pink Lady and Granny Smith, but these are tart tasting. Save the Granny Smiths for cooking, or wait two more weeks for the ..

Welcome to the Year of the Dog! After celebrating Chinese New Year at the Brisbane Produce Market, we’re seeing diminished supplies of Asian vegetables such as bok choy, choy sum, coriander, enoki mushrooms, and oyster mushrooms. So popular was wombok cabbage that prices increased as much as 400% on previous weeks! Also in low supply are heat-affected broccoli, beans, spinach, lettuce, herbs, and cauliflower. That might seem like a long list, but we’ve got plenty of well-priced alternatives for your dinner plate this week: carrots, potatoes, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, c..

Despite the consistently hot temperatures across the state, it’s a time of transition for some of our fresh produce. This week we’ve begun farewelling a few summer favourites this week, including blueberries, menindee grapes, and Australian-grown apricots. Avocados are at a cross-point in the season, with shephard avos starting to come through at a cheaper price than hass. The pineapple season in Bundaberg is also winding down, so supplies will be lower until the Sunshine Coast crop starts. As one season ends, another begins and we are excited to see the start of th..

With a welcome cool change across the state, we’re seeing many long-suffering vegies bounce back this week at the Brisbane Produce Market. Herbs, broccoli, lettuce, and other salad leaves are all in recovery mode and supplies are up. Other vegies hitting their peak are squash, the fibre-rich cousin of the pumpkin, and Stanthorpe- and Shepparton-grown tomatoes. Also in plentiful supply are carrots, beetroot, eggplant, continental cucumber, and Aussie-grown garlic. Still feeling the heat are spinach, spring onions and beans, while capsicums, mushrooms and cabbage are expensive..

Heatwaves in Victoria and South Australia, the avocado shortage, and the glut of pineapples have all been making headlines around the country this week. But for a good news story at the Brisbane Produce Market, we have a word for you: stonefruit. Your Local Fruit Shop owners’ shelves are heaving with top quality peaches, plums and nectarines, particularly the white varieties known as Majestic Pearl and Fire Pearl. Now’s the time to buy up big and use any excess in compotes, upside-down cakes, crumbles, and jams. Look for plump, fragrant, and richly coloured fruit that gives ..

The Brisbane Produce Market has your back, with a huge supply of snackable fruit that’s perfect for busy kids. Stonefruit continue to shine, with yellow and white nectarines and peaches offering great flavour and value. Plums are also in good supply, while we’re seeing excellent-quality apricots arriving from Tasmania. Vitamin C-packed cherries, blueberries and strawberries are in good supply and make ideal snacks for l..

With temperatures soaring around Queensland, here at the Brisbane Produce Market we’re looking for ways to eat light and keep cool. Thankfully, high summer brings a plentiful supply of produce for crisp salads and fruity snacks. For a quintessential summer experience, we reckon nothing beats biting into a juicy stone fruit. This week, we’ve got an abundance of red- and black-skinned plums as well as large nectarines and peaches from Victoria. These stonefruits are at their best, so savour them as snacks, in cakes, or topping desserts like the classic pavlova. Aus..

Prices are on the rise as Christmas shoppers scoop up their fresh produce in time for the festive celebrations, with some family favourites struggling with quality caused by summer heat and Victorian storms. Look out for top quality, value-for-money Asian vegetables, beetroot, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, eggplant, silverbeet, mushrooms, onions, sweet potatoes and pumpkin. Sweet corn has reduced to a reasonable price with the tender corn-ears best eaten immediately or frozen for later to avoid the sugar content turning into starch. Potatoes are slightly firmer in price with..

The abundance of summer fresh produce is on offer at Your Local Fruit Shop with only a minor impact on prices after recent heat and rain fluctuations in the southern growing regions. Look out for great quality Asian vegetables, beans, beetroot, cabbage, cauliflower, capsicum, carrot, celery, parsnips, snow peas, silverbeet, sweet corn, zucchini, mushroom, onions, potatoes and pumpkin. Sweet potatoes have also fallen in price and are excellent roasted, mashed, steamed, barbecued or fried. Choose ones that are firm to touch with brightly coloured skins. You will pay firm prices for ..
