Brisbane Market Report - 34

Good quality vegetables and berries will be at the top of the grocery list for bargain hunters this week with spring crops providing plenty of variety at the Brisbane Produce Market.

Beetroot, snow peas and pumpkin are cheap.

Other vegetables, such as quality Asian vegetables, Peruvian and new season Australian asparagus, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, celery, eggplant, fennel, leeks, parsnips, silverbeet, mushrooms and sweet potato are value-for-money.

Beans are fluctuating in price and have dropped to being of more reasonable value.

The size and markings on zucchinis have had a big determination on their price with the larger, more matured vegetables cheap while the smaller, premium quality zucchinis are firmly priced.

Expect to pay firm prices for green capsicum and even higher prices for red capsicum, onions, potatoes and squash.

In the salad line, tomatoes have fallen in price but will still cost you more than usual, with the exception being roma and cherry tomatoes which are still expensive.

Cucumbers are also firmly priced with lebanese varieties considered expensive but you can still make your salad with bargain priced lettuce and eshallots, and reasonably priced avocados and salad leaf mixes.

Herbs are plentiful with basil of poorer quality after recent rains. Look for whole, smooth basil leaves that are aromatic, bright green and free of black spots. Avoid any leaves that are wilting.

It's berry time with strawberries at their cheapest and raspberries and blueberries of reasonable price.  Kiwifruit, also known as Chinese gooseberries since they were originally an edible berry from north-central and eastern China, are also cheap.

While looking for bargains, you can also pick up cheap pineapples this week.  Some lime offerings are also considered cheap but the best quality are firmly priced.

Mandarins, navel oranges, watermelon and passionfruit are reasonably priced.

Expect to pay firm prices for pears and apples, while the most expensive buys are bananas, lemons, imported grapes, figs, honey dew, both yellow and red pawpaw and imported stonefruit
