Brisbane Produce Report – 7 August

  August 7, 2020  strump

We are spoilt for choice with so much mouth-watering produce available in the Brisbane Produce Market this week. Now is a great time to be cooking at home and trying out some new recipes with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Beautiful berries are making their way to winter – make the most of fresh local strawberries and blueberries while they are plentiful. Use these tiny nutrient bombs to make a delectable dessert or pop them in your kid’s lunchbox.

Bananas and panama passionfruit are your best bet for smoothies this week. You can choose from different varieties of passionfruit as the larger variety is from Queensland and the smaller sweetheart variety is from New South Wales. Joining the tropical team are the tangy and sweet Australian jubilee pineapples – rich in antioxidants and low in acidity, they bring a fresh taste when added to stir-fries.

The standout citrus this week is ruby-fleshed juicy blood oranges – they are only in season for two months so grab them while you can, to make stunning cakes, tarts, salads and sauces. Other value buys include cara cara navel oranges from South Australia, seedless limes, lemons from Mundubbera, honey murcott mandarins from Gayndah, papaya from Innisfail and hass avocados from the Northern Territory. Supplies of kiwi, rockmelon and raspberries are impacted by the weather.

Locally grown vegetables are well supplied this week including cherry and truss tomatoes from Bowen, handpicked beans from Gympie, and zucchini and sweet potatoes from Bundaberg. After a period of unpredictable supply, iceberg lettuce is back in good quality from Redland Bay along with spinach, kale, spring onions, leeks, coriander, mint, parsley and radicchio.

Locally-grown cauliflower and broccoli are excellent quality at the moment and a superb choice for winter cooking. To maximise their freshness, store in the crisper section of the fridge for 4-5 days. Winter is the peak season for celeriac too. The tasty root vegetable is packed with loads of flavour and is ideal for adding to casseroles or roasts.

Versatile carrots, pumpkins, potatoes and onions are great value for money along with beetroot and Brussels sprouts as they are all plentiful, however, supplies of cucumbers, snow peas, eggplants, okra, silverbeet and mushrooms have dropped off.

This week’s top pick is Queensland-grown luscious strawberries. Look for strawberries with a deep red colour and sweet aroma and store in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. Rich in vitamin C, strawberries are incredibly versatile: use them to top porridge or pancakes or add them to cakes, crumbles and muffins with ingredients like orange, nuts, chocolate, cinnamon, honey, natural yoghurt and cream. Craving the iconic strawberry sundae? Why not buy some fresh strawberries from your local fruit shop and enjoy them with ice-cream at home.
