Brisbane Produce Report – 22 May

  May 21, 2020   strump

As the temperature falls, we are drawn towards flavoursome roasts, oozing puddings and warming hearty soups. YUM! Luckily, the Brisbane Produce Market has a huge supply of fresh fruit and vegetables that are perfect for creating the ultimate in comfort food.

All varieties of apples in the market this week are eating well but standouts are the pink lady and granny smith varieties. Cavendish bananas continue to delight this week with their bright yellow skin and good supplies. Local lemons and limes are available in strong volumes with navel oranges from South Australia eating well. Imperial mandarins continue to impress with their good value and quality.

Blueberry supplies have started to pick up and the appearance of some Queensland-grown strawberries highlights early winter. Both raspberries and persimmons are in excellent supply and quality. For an ultimate snack, bake some scrumptious raspberry and coconut muffins.

Pinks mammoth custard apples, dark-skinned figs and white seedless grapes are still eating well whereas supplies of passionfruit, grapefruit and rockmelons are tight. Yellow pawpaw, pears, nashi, watermelon and pineapple are good buys this week.

Craving soups? Look out for ideal pairings such as potato and leeks, carrot and fennel, tomato and coriander, and pumpkin and corn with a small amount of finger lime – these seasonal vegetables are available in good quality at your local fruit shop. Leafy greens such as kale, silverbeet, lettuce, spinach and rocket are plentiful however supplies of cauliflower and zucchini are light.

Another great leafy green to try this season is watercress which is in good supply. Watercress belongs to the same family as broccoli and kale and its versatility makes it a great addition to soups, salads and eggs. Brussels sprouts from Victoria are in great supply along with cabbage, eggplant, beetroot, shallots, cucumber and mushrooms. Staple produce such as onions, sweet potatoes and chilies are in abundance and in short supplies are snow peas, roma tomatoes, basil, ginger and parsnips.

This week’s top pick is the red capsicum from Bowen. This versatile vegetable can be stir-fried, stewed, stuffed, roasted, barbecued or eaten raw. Red capsicum is the sweetest amongst all varieties and is perfect for vibrant salads and dips. Choose capsicums that are deeply coloured, glossy and firm, and store them in the crisper section of the refrigerator for up to a week. For an easy to prepare side dish, make stuffed capsicum with beef mince, carrot and tomato and serve hot with parmesan cheese on top.
