Brisbane Markets® Produce Report — 20 March 2020

  March 20, 2020   lleeson

Eating healthy fruit and vegetables has never been more important and the Brisbane Produce Market is THE place for everything fresh and healthy. We are fortunate that we can rely on Australian grown fruit and vegetables and this week we have steady supplies coming into the market. Consumers can be confident that favourable conditions including good rain and milder temperatures means the supply of fresh produce from Queensland growers is expected to increase over the coming weeks.

Strawberries and blueberries show no sign of slowing down, with both in good supply. Apples of all varieties are plentiful, as nights start to cool why not try an apple crumble with custard?

A good supply of Shepard avocados is still coming from North Queensland. This is the week for Mexican food, how about a guacamole with coriander, finely chopped red onion and a squeeze of lime juice. Limes are in good supply. Custard apples are in peak season. We are spoilt for choice with healthy supplies of dragonfruit, persimmons, pears, pineapples, plums, watermelons and figs. White grapes from Victoria are particularly great for eating.

Valencia oranges are coming from New South Wales and there is a reasonable supply of mangosteens. Mangosteens, known as the “Queen of Fruits” is a sweet tropical fruit renowned for its super sweet flavor and bright purple colour. They can be made into a juice or jam. Mangosteen is sweetest and ready to eat when the rind is dark purple. Choose mangosteens that have bright green and glossy stems.

In vegetables, kale and carrots are both in good supply as are lettuce, mushrooms, artichokes, silverbeet, squash, sweet potato, eggplant, corn, chokos, tomatoes, zucchini and potatoes. Queensland grown capsicum is currently priced at a premium. A number of vegetable lines that had been experiencing limited availability has resulted in higher prices however consumers should see prices returning to normal with good supplies expected over the coming weeks. There is a healthy supply of locally grown ginger. You can add a fresh slice of ginger in a cup of herbal tea to add fruit tones to your brew.

Healthy eating is so important at the moment we couldn’t pick just one item of produce as our ‘pick of the week’ so we picked them ALL. It’s starting to get cool so why not make a hearty vegetable soup, or for something fresh and cool make a bowl of fruit salad and add a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Or create something new!
