Moderate weather conditions over the past week have seen good supplies of most fruit and vegetables at the Brisbane Produce Market.
Hass avocados from north Queensland are at the peak of their season, while Innisfail-grown bananas are plentiful. Queensland-grown navel oranges are at their best, they’re seedless, sweet and juicy. Other citrus fruits like lemons and limes are both well supplied.
All varieties of apple are eating well, but the sweet and crunchy Pink Lady is eating beautifully presently. Sunshine Coast-grown pineapple is another favourite; for a winter dessert, try it sliced and grilled with brown sugar, lime and cinnamon.
Strawberries are picking up, but despite the small quantities coming out of Caboolture and Sunshine Coast, the fruit is of good quality. Raspberries are continuing their strong season, while there are good supplies of Packham pears, passionfruit, nashi, watermelon, dragon fruit and chestnuts.
Rockmelons and blueberries are in short supply. Green grapes are on their way out (although red are still available), as are Queensland Imperial mandarins, custard apples and persimmons.
In vegies, the markets are well supplied with beans, broccoli, eggplant, Asian vegetables, cabbage, wombok, kale, lettuce, mushrooms, celery, chillies, garlic, ginger, cucumber, okra and fennel. Rosemary, mint and coriander are the best-looking herbs this week.
Make use of great-value rocket, salad leaves, shallot, silverbeet, spinach, watercress in warming pies like spanakopita with feta cheese. Other great buys include red capsicum, cauliflower, zucchini, onions, radishes, potatoes and brussels sprouts — sauté with brown butter and lemon. For something different, try green kohlrabi (it’s great roasted), or whip up a warming dessert with the excellent rhubarb coming from Mt. Tamborine.
Supplies of fresh broad beans, snow peas, spring onions and corn are decreasing. The Australian asparagus season is now over, but customers will see new imported supplies arriving.
This week’s top pick is the sweet potato from Bundaberg. Gold sweet potato is the most common variety in Queensland, but you can also find red, white and purple (Hawaiian) varieties. Versatile and packed with beta carotene and fibre, sweet potatoes are perfect for comfort food like soups alongside orange juice, coconut milk, vegetable stock, spring onions and cream. Try grating sweet potato for fritters with almond meal, eggs and spices like cumin, coriander seeds and chilli.
