Brisbane Market Report 130

Recent rain and warmer temperatures are affecting supplies at the Brisbane Produce Market, as spring brings a change in growing regions.

Stock up on citrus fruits this week, including Queensland-grown seedless lemons, limes, Victorian-grown grapefruit and easy-peel Navels, and tangelos from Loxton in South Australia. Swap tangelos into your favourite citrus recipes likes marmalade, delicious puddings, tarts, and cakes.

Bananas still have their duller winter skin, but are sweeter eating, with Lady Fingers from NSW and Queensland especially popular.  Queensland-grown pineapples and Victorian-grown Corella pears are a great buy. We’re also seeing increasing supplies of mangoes from the Northern Territory.

Expect apple prices to increase until the new season starts in February. Supplies are still limited for blueberries which have been affected by frost.  Hass avocados from Central Queensland are at the end of their season. New season Hass is coming in from Western Australian and will soon arrive from Tambourine and northern New South Wale regions.

Locally grown bunch lines such as radishes, beetroots, silverbeet, spring onions, and bok choy are in abundant supply. Also great value this week are beans, cabbage, corn, kale, rocket, iceberg lettuce, and the excellent-quality eggplant from Bowen. Consider adding coriander, parsley, and ginger to your cooking, as all are in peak supply.

We recommend all the smaller varieties of tomatoes including cherry, mini roma, and grape, as well as zucchini and its sweet baby variety from Gympie — perfect for little fingers. Or experiment with zucchini flowers, which combine well with Italian flavours: try stuffing them with goat’s curd and frying in a light batter. And many recipes will benefit from the abundance of coriander, parsley, and ginger.

Asparagus and Lebanese cucumbers are increasing in supply, so you should notice prices coming down soon. Red and green capsicums are still dear, but the quality is fantastic. On the dearer side this week are broccoli, cauliflower, and snow peas, which have all been affected by recent cooler weather.

This week’s top pick is sweet red papaya from Innisfail in northern Queensland. Look for ripe fruit with green/yellow skin that yields gently to pressure. Once ripe, store in the refrigerator for up to two days. To whip up a quick breakfast, drizzle papaya with lime juice, slice and combine with muesli and natural yoghurt.
