Brisbane Produce Market Report - 02

The firmer prices of new season fruits are not putting off buyers with plenty on the shelves to taste and lots of salad and vegetables at reasonable prices to fill the grocery basket.

In the vegetable aisles, look for cheap, good quality cauliflower and cabbage this week.

The price conscious can also find reasonably priced Asian vegetables, asparagus, beetroot, broccoli, carrot, celery, eggplant, snow peas, silverbeet, sweet corn, zucchini, onions, potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Beans and leeks are also reasonably priced but of average quality.

You will pay firmer prices for parsnips, most squash varieties and mushrooms.

New season capsicums are arriving from the Bundaberg growing districts but are still expensive. Brussels sprouts are at the end of their season and also costly while both fennel and pumpkin are also firmly priced.

The hot weather is perfect for salads with tomatoes, lettuce, mixed salad leaf, cucumber, eshallots and herbs reasonably priced. Avocados have been firmly priced all season.

Australian stonefruit has dropped in price and is reasonable, with the exception of expensive plums. Other summer favourites like cherries are of average quality and expensive and mangoes are still firmly priced.

The best buys are bananas, blueberries, valencia oranges, all melons, pineapples and pawpaw.

Expect to pay firm prices for good quality apples, strawberries, raspberries, end of season mandarins, navel oranges, Italian kiwifruit and pears.

For those with no budget concerns, you can still pick up passionfruit, figs, grapes and lemons but they are expensive.  Limes are firmly priced and are expected to become more expensive as the end of the year draws near.
