Brisbane Produce Report – 14 February

  February 14, 2020   strump

It’s not too late to pick up some cherries to celebrate Valentine’s Day, as the season nears its end.

Strawberries from Victoria would also make a great Valentine’s Day snack to serve up, even though the supply is a little tight due to the heat. White seedless, black sapphire or crimson red grapes are also all good quality and good eating this week.

There is a good supply of blueberries from Tumbarumba as well as good quality nectarines and peaches from Victoria. Golden queen peaches are also great eating with beautiful yellow flesh.

Juicy pineapples from the Sunshine Coast and watermelon from New South Wales (NSW) are both good eating and would make great after school snacks for the kids. Pack some large cavendish bananas or royal gala apples in the family’s lunchboxes as they are good quality. There are good supplies of honey gold mangoes from Mareeba and large keitt mangoes. Mangosteens also make an appearance this week as well as red variety pawpaws, with the yellow variety in shorter supply.

Valencia oranges from NSW are in good supply and ideal for juicing. Include them in a smoothie with dragon fruit and passionfruit, also both in good supply. New-season william pears are here and queen garnet plums from Victoria are good eating.

Pick of the week is rockmelon, also known as cantaloupe. Supplies currently from NSW, they are great quality with a musky aroma and sweet flavour. Melons have a high-water content and are low in calories, making them ideal for those watching their weight. They are a good source of potassium, vitamins B and C. Choose melons that are heavy for their size avoiding those with soft rinds, brownish colours, or excessive spotting or scarring.

Shepard avocadoes from north Queensland are priced at a premium this week and lemons are in shorter supply. Substitute with limes, in plentiful supply also from north Queensland.

Locally grown Asian vegetables are all in good supply. Brussels sprouts from Western Australia and beans from Gympie are in good supply. Broad beans and cabbage are in short supply with prices at a premium for cauliflower and capsicums from South Australia.

There is a good supply this week of cucumbers, eggplant, kale, leeks, lettuce, rocket, spinach, spring onions and tomatoes. All herbs including coriander are in short supply due to the combination of heat and rain.

New-season zucchini from Stanthorpe is available, well priced and good quality. There is also a good supply of snow peas and sugar snaps from Bundaberg, and a moderate supply of broccoli. Avoid broccoli heads which are loose and yellow in colour. Mushrooms are good quality but in short supply, as is sweet potato, with only the red and white varieties available. There is a limited supply of rhubarb and butternut pumpkin. Silverbeet is good quality and fennel is available.

Sweet corn from Bowen is in good supply and would make a perfect snack for a rainy afternoon.
