Brisbane Produce Report – 13 December

  December 12, 2019   strump

Summer fruit remains bountiful this week with stone fruit, grapes, mangoes and pineapple all in good supply.

Limes, lychees and passionfruit are all also in good supply and ideal for summer fruit salads and cocktails. One of our favourites is the Panama passionfruit, which is especially sweet now.

Both Kensington Pride and R2E2 mangoes from Bowen, Mareeba and Dimbulah are good quality eating and in great supply this week, as are Reed and Hass varieties of avocadoes coming from local areas such as Mt Tamborine and the Wurtz variety from Gatton. Combine them with butter lettuce, cooked tiger prawns, lime juice and coriander for a taste of summer or a crowd-pleasing Christmas day salad.

There are good supplies of pineapple from Mareeba in North Queensland, however, the season is finishing and prices will depend on size. Pawpaw, another great summer tropical fruit, is of good quality and supply from local areas – the Red variety from Tully and Mareeba and Yellow and Red varieties from South Johnstone.

Figs are in good supply mainly from Victoria, but also some local areas such as the Glasshouse Mountains. Cherries also continue to be in good supply as do rockmelons, with a good supply from Bundaberg.

Both white and red seedless grapes are coming into season and prices are expected to drop over the coming weeks with good supply and quantity. Blueberries and raspberries from Victoria and NSW are the pick of the berries, with strawberries in good supply from Mt Barker, SA. Apricots, nectarines and peaches all from Victoria are in good supply. Look out for both the white and yellow varieties of nectarines and peaches.

One of this week’s top picks is the plum, with excellent supplies arriving from all over Queensland – Red Beaut from Applethorpe, as well as Wilson, blood and black varieties from Stanthorpe. Select smooth-skinned, shiny fruit and store in the refrigerator for up to four days. Expect prices to drop in the coming weeks.

Due to the hot weather some vegetables including broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, cauliflower and celery will be in shorter supply. Coriander is also affected, as are most other herbs. Zucchini, Lebanese and Continental cucumbers are also in short supply due to hot weather. Endive is good quality from Queensland, but overall, supply is short.

There is plenty of good quality corn and iceberg lettuce from Toowoomba is also plentiful and of good quality.

Finally, the shelves are overflowing with all varieties of tomato, particularly trussed tomatoes from Gatton and Flagstone Creek. Gourmet, cherry and grape varieties from all areas are also in good supply and great quality. Make the most of tomatoes and enjoy them in everything from pastas and salads to salsas. Cherry tomatoes also great make healthy snacks for the kids.
