Brisbane Market Report 187

Mangoes and stone fruit have begun to arrive in abundant volumes, so if you haven’t yet tried these summer beauties, now’s the time to add them to your basket.

The quality of the nectarines and peaches is impressive and prices will continue to go down as supplies increase. Mangoes are fantastic value this week with great supplies from the Northern Territory and Queensland. Also look out for Black Diamond plums, yellow peaches, Snow Angel white peaches and apricots.

Tropical fruits are another stand-out with lychees, limes, dragonfruit, pawpaw, passionfruit, pineapple all well supplied from north Queensland. Blueberries are plentiful and both raspberries and strawberries are in good supply.

Queensland-grown rockmelons and watermelons are fantastic value and quality — choose fruit that feel heavy for its size with unblemished skin. Banana supplies are increasing, so prices will improve accordingly. Hass avocados, Valencia oranges and pears are all in good supply, and we’ve been excited to see the first appearance of cherries from Victoria.

Vegetable supplies are looking terrific this week, with good volumes of asparagus, corn, eggplant, baby spinach, sweet potato, kale, red cabbage, silverbeet, cucumbers, mushrooms, fennel, and all varieties of herbs. Green, butter and berlotti beans are all in supply and zucchini supplies are picking up.

Salads on the menu? You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to greens with baby spinach, salad leaves, rocket, baby cos lettuce and watercress all in great supply.

Baby cucumbers from Bundaberg, cherry tomatoes and snow peas are the perfect size for little hands and lunch boxes or serve them up on the table before dinner as a healthy grazing option.

Keep an eye out for Kipfler potatoes this week — a long, narrow, waxy variety, Kipflers are fantastic for baking, roasting or boiling. However, wet weather and heat have had an impact on supplies of broccoli, capsicum and cauliflower.

This week’s top pick is cherry tomatoes, with bumper supplies currently arriving from Bundaberg. Look for smooth, brightly coloured tomatoes that are plump for their size and store at room temperature for up to three days, or in the fridge once ripe. Wonderful for snacking and salads, cherry tomatoes also make a gorgeous addition to summer pasta dishes — simply add to a frying pan with olive oil, garlic, black pepper and chilli flakes and stir through pasta with fresh parsley and parmesan.
