Brisbane Market Report 179

It’s a great week for locally grown fruits and vegetables, with Queensland produce dominating the shelves.

Local berries, citrus, pineapples and rockmelon are plentiful, and bananas are eating well despite their some-times dull winter skin. Strawberries from the Sunshine Coast and blueberries are fantastic value and quality, while local lemons and limes are calling out for zesty desserts, tarts and drinks.

From Innisfail in north Queensland, red papaya is deliciously sweet at the moment. Other good buys include navel oranges, pears, and Afourer mandarins — this variety has a sweet, refreshing flavour and is easy to peel.

If you’re a fan of mangosteens, the tropical purple-coloured fruit from South-East Asia, we have some great quality fruit in stock. Look for a fresh green stem with unblemished skin that yields slightly to pressure.

While Queensland supplies of Hass avocados have slowed, the Fuerte variety from Victoria is becoming available. Pink lady and gala varieties are running low, as are passionfruit. The nashi season is nearly over.

If you’re keen to find Queensland-grown vegetables for this week’s menu, we’ve got plenty of great options including beetroot, lettuce, spring onions, cabbage from the Lockyer Valley, Bundaberg-grown beans, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, zucchini from Bowen, coriander, parsley, and ginger from the Sunshine Coast.

Cauliflower, corn and fennel are all well-supplied. Add more greens to your plate with great value leeks, rocket, asparagus, broccoli and spinach. Excellent quality cherry, mini-roma and grape tomatoes have us dreaming of the Mediterranean — toss fresh tomatoes through pasta with plenty of basil, olive oil, salt, pepper and parmesan (add chilli flakes for extra kick).

All varieties of capsicum are looking good this week. Red capsicums are the sweetest for snacking and salads, while green capsicums are more bitter and work well in stir-fries and bakes. Yellow capsicum has a fruity flavour and adds gorgeous colour to pasta salads.

Brussels sprouts are about to finish up, Lebanese cucumber supplies are short, and eggplant supplies are moderate.

This week’s top pick is blueberries, an excellent source of fibre, potassium and vitamins C and K. Look for blueberries that are plump, firm and unblemished and store in the fridge, only wash them immediately before eating. Add blueberries to yoghurt and lemon cakes, ginger and pineapple punch, or fold through pikelet batter.
