Brisbane Produce Report – 24 January

  January 23, 2020   strump

Enjoy the long weekend with a great selection of Aussie fruit and vegetables from the Brisbane Produce Market.

A good supply of Kensington Pride, Honeygold, Brooks and Kent mangoes, Tasmanian cherries and Queensland figs would all make mouth-watering toppings for your Australia Day pavlova.  Apples, Paradise and Packham pears and red and green seedless grapes add a refreshing element to barbeque cheese and grazing platters. If you’re looking for berries you may need to search as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are all in shorter supply this week. Don’t forget to throw some fresh corn on the barbeque, sprinkled with a little lime juice with salt and butter to serve.

Or why not celebrate the Chinese New Year on 25 January with lychees from the Sunshine Coast, or another member of the lychee family, longans. Be on the lookout for jujubes, otherwise known as Chinese dates, locally grown in Inglewood. A strawberry sized fruit with a seed in the centre and white to reddish skin, they’re a rich source of Vitamin C.

The tropical theme continues with dragon fruit, pawpaws and Cavendish bananas, all good eating. And nothing symbolises a Queensland summer more than the king of fruit, the pineapple, which is this week’s top pick! Smell the bottom of the pineapple to gauge its level of sweetness! It’s perfect for Aussie day barbeques, served hot on a burger, in summer drinks or punch. While pineapples are available all year round, its peak season is from January to July.

Stone fruit is still in season. Peaches from Victoria, smooth fleshed nectarines and sweet and juicy black plums are all in good supply and great eating this week. Both rockmelon and watermelon are good quality and in good supply. Prepare a healthy melon platter or an Italian themed melon salad with the addition of grilled nectarines, prosciutto and mozzarella. Garnish with a little mint, in good supply this week as are all herbs, with the exception of chives and coriander which may be a little harder to source.

There are plenty of vibrant summer salads bursting with goodness in the Brisbane Produce Markets this week. A range of leafy salad ingredients such as rocket, spinach or kale, or iceberg and romaine lettuce and silverbeet work well with fresh cucumber, grated carrot, tomatoes, snow pears and sugar snaps. Don’t forget a chopped avocado or two, with local new season Shepards, Hass from Western Australia or Reef from New South Wales all available. Finally, dress with a simple vinaigrette of lime or lemon juice, good quality olive oil and seasonings and herbs of your choice.

If looking for low-carb options after all that rich holiday food try spiralizing some zucchini noodles in place of pasta or substitute cauliflower rice for white rice. Hop onto the celery juice trend with some crisp celery, in abundant supply and good quality this week.

In spite of the heat why not roast some beetroot, sweet potatoes, leeks, Bundaberg white potatoes, capsicums and squash for a delicious and hearty vegan meal or side dish to meat? Another alternative would be a quick stir-fry of broccoli, green or purple cabbage, eggplant and snake beans.
