Brisbane Market Report 188

Stone fruits and salad lines are offering excellent variety this week, with stone fruit and mangoes the standouts.

Nectarines, peaches, and R2E2 mangoes are worth trying if you haven’t already this season – large and round in size, R2E2s have a sweet, mild flavour. Ripe mangoes will have a sweet fragrance and will yield slightly to the touch.

Raspberries, blueberries and Victorian-grown strawberries are all well-supplied. Other great buys include limes, rockmelon, watermelon and Pink Lady apples. Lychee and cherry season is kicking off, and we’re also seeing the first of the Queensland-grown plums. The Queensland avocado season has finished, so most supplies are arriving from Western Australia.

Spotted an unusual looking pear? Characterised by a vibrant red blush, Ricó pears are a new variety grown in the Goulburn Valley. Similar in size and shape to a Packham, Ricó pears have a crunchy texture and sweet flavour which becomes even sweeter as they soften. They’re only available for a short time, so we encourage you to give them a try.

Pineapples, passionfruit and lemons are in short supply, so prices are at a premium. You can still find Honey Murcott mandarins around, but the season will soon end.

With Asian veggies in abundant supply and offering great value, stir-fries should be on the menu this week. Asparagus, cucumbers, potatoes and all varieties of herbs are also fantastic buys. Make the most of the beautiful truss tomatoes that are currently on the shelves – buy in bulk, halve and top with garlic, thyme, balsamic vinegar and olive oil before roasting and using in salads or as a stand-alone side.

We’ve got moderate supplies of capsicum, zucchini and other tomatoes. Broccoli and corn are both short, while cauliflower is in very short supply. The season for Brussels sprouts has ended.

This week’s top pick is the cucumber, the ultimate refreshing summer vegetable. Look for firm, dark green cucumbers without blemishes or soft spots and store in the fridge. For a simple side to accompany fish, sprinkle sliced cucumbers with seas salt and chopped fresh herbs. Cucumber also stars in many salad and refreshing drink recipes – play around with adding ingredients like dill, mint, mustard seeds or simply infuse it with lemon in your daily water intake.
